Hi everyone,
Last night, returning from the cinema we took the usual short cut along a fairly narrow twisty stretch of road, from Scunthorpe towards the Humber Bridge.
My girlfriend was driving her 1 year old Fiesta.
I noticed a car coming from the opposite direction around a tight bend who still had main beam on.
Suddenly he hit the car, scraping the entire offside of the car.
I jumped into the drivers seat and rushed down the road (the car hadn't stopped) unfortunatley he was long gone.
A quick call to the Police (surely they could keep an eye out for a white mark 4 escort with big scrapes and black paint at midnight!) got us nowhere. They said to come in this morning with our documents and there was nothing they could do.
Such is life I guess, but I will be writing to the Police about their attitude.

Sorry to hear this Keith.
You do wonder about the driver of the Escort if he had full beams on and still hit you. Must have been going at a heck of a speed if he couldn't avoid you.
I assume your girlfriend is more than a bit shook up. Tell her not to worry, it's no reflection on her and a car is metal and can be repaired. Body parts are harder to deal with.

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?

That does indeed sound a nightmare, and is precisely the reason I hate driving on country lanes!
My only tip, as someone who's been there, is to get your girlfriend back in the car and driving as soon as possible. I was forced to drive my car back home straight after I was hit by a lorry last year - the person I was with knew that if I didn't, I would probably never get in a car again!
Good luck with getting everything sorted, and the insurance company!

Hi
Ive been there, The Police are USELESS!
I even found the car later that day that hit me & told them where it was, but they didnt care.
All they wanted where to see my documents!
I saw the car & driver about a week later coming down the road towards me, so I aimed at him, He took to the grass verge to get away & ive never seen him or the car since.

Sorry mods, I deliberately wasn't going to do this in my original post, but...
Midnight on Saturday is peak policing time. The police are not useless, they just don't have the funding and resources to respond to everything, so they have to prioritise.
Was anyone's life in immediate danger when Keith S called? No.
Was the offender in the immediate vicinity? No. He was "long gone".
Deliberately driving at someone, regardless of what has gone before, is nothing but stupid. Maybe if there were a few less people acting like yobs, the police would be able to direct more resources at helping innocent people who get caught up in things like this.

Sorry PG but if the police are not going to do anything we will.
I had a motorbike stolen, I told the police who stole it and where it was. They were not interested as they had no 'evidence' apparently my evidence was not sufficient. The motorbike was retrieved by myself and my cousins whilst retrieving it we offered the thieves appropriate counselling for their loss.

I'm not sure whether you're joking and I just don't get the irony, or whether you actually blame the police for this and thought you did the right thing...
The police cannot just search a property without evidence. And you saying "Yeah it's definitely him" is not evidence.
Perhaps I should call the police and tell them the guy over the road who I don't get on with has stolen something and the police can raid his house and pull up floorboards looking for it. Then I could just say "Ah, sorry, yeah, I really thought he had. He must have got rid of it."

Mark,
As I state in my post WHO TOOK IT AND WHERE IT WAS as in I had personally seem it parked in an open garage.
Yes I do blame the police for not taking action and yes I do think I did the right thing by recovering my own property.
Happy now?

It might be because he was intoxicated that he failed to negotiate the bend properly and hit Keiths car. The next bend it may be a head on with a fatality. Surely the police should prioritise catching this car?

I have to diagree with the assertion that the police are useless.
Last year my car was pranged in a carpark by a hit and run. Two passers-by noted the guys reg no. and car details and offered to be witnesses. Although the officer at the local station tried his best to dissuade me from making an official report I persisted. Within three days the police had identified and interviewed the driver (he had history) and obtained an admission of guilt. They then visited me at home and gave me everything I needed to smooth out the insurance claim.
I also have legal expense cover on my policy so all the paperwork was handled by a solicitor. Problem sorted within a few weeks.

Went to the police station this afternoon to report.
On the way we happened to see the white ford escort parked outside of a scrapyard.
We got the reg number and the police pnc check showed that the car had been reported stolen sometime before the accident - so its reasonably certain the driver was a 'joyrider' and not the owner.
They are going to see if there are any prints etc, but it is doubtful whether anything will be found.
Even more annoying is that we rang the police about a white ford escort being driven so aggressively and they had on their records that one had been stolen an hour earlier!
Could have been a much more serious accident :(
The Policeman who dealt with us at the station was excellent and quite apologetic at how we had been treated by the 'call centre' on the night.
They know who the usual scroats are who carry out these crimes, just a shame that cars are such difficult things to recover prints from - apparently.
I wonder how we now stand on the insurance side of things. Isn't there a scheme (motor insurance bureau I think) that covers uninsured drivers? Or are we destined to loose ncb as well as policy excess?
|
Keith - been in a similar situation - my car was hit by a stolen car whilst parked (no one in it). Police response was excellent, but there was an injured party in another car. Don't waste your time with Motor Insurance Bureau, you don't know the other driver and neither of you were injured - exactly the same as my circumstances and they wouldn't entertain a claim from me. Its a bummer, but you will have to claim off your own insurance.
|
The MIB site suggests that insurers will not lower ncb as a result of this type of claim. what happened with yours davey?
|
My NCB was lowered as a result and the premium shot through the roof (I was with e-sure and the claim reduced my NCB to three years - they only insure drivers with 4 years NCB!). I shopped around and used Frizzell who were cheaper than esure had been before the accident. No chance of not getting a reduced NCB though because I had had a claim, regardless of it not being my fault.
