2000 Golf TDI - grae459
Hi, i have an annoying problem on my golf tdi. When i apply the foot brake when slowing down comming up to traffic lights for example the engine will begin idling strangely. Then when i take my foot off the brake it will stop and idle as normal when im waiting for the lights to turn green. Could this have something to do with ABS for example a sensor.
This is the only instances when it occurs. It does not occur when braking down from great speeds.

Any help is appreciated.

Check that your brake lights are actually working when brake pedal is depressed. Then replace the brake lamp switch,it is a very common fault on this vehicle. From your description it sounds as if you may have intermittent bad contact at the switch.

Can you induce the problem when stationary i.e. apply brakes and the tick over ditheres. If so this could well be a minor split in theservo diaphram. not an uncommon fault and can last for ages before it effects the brakes. To double check if it does do it disconnect the servo pipe and block it off, then apply the braked several times and if the problem has come then the servo is at fauly and should be replaced ASAP.
