It's an Escort. How old?
If more than 7 years old or so, chances are the fromt brake hoses may be in on the way out.
Have you changed them?
Have you checked the runout of the disks?
Are the wheel bearings worn?
Have you checked the brake pads move evenly when the brakes are applied?

The car is about 6 years old (early 1998 I believe). The disks almost invariably warp within 5,000 miles or so and even straight after I've had a new pair of disks fitted I can usually feel a little pull on the steering wheel with each wheel revolution when travelling at slow speeds...
I don't think the wheel bearings are worn because it has been happening since I bought it (with 12 months MOT done by a national chain tyre/brake/exhaust specialist).
Do you think that I am probably looking at mega-bucks here? Should I part exchange it for a new car?

How about checking that the master cylinder is free and not holding the brakes on partially.
My old Maxi, showing my age here, allowed water to drip on the master cylinder causing a partial seizure (me and the car both).

Apart from whats been said.would take the disc off and check the face of hub to see if any dirt there.could also be the hub face may not be perfectly flat.same can be said for inside face of disc.they must both be perfectly clean and flat when fitting

I would suggest changing the flexi pipes on all four wheels.if the fluid ie brake fluid hasnt been changed.would suggest it is done.brake fluid breaks down if not changed.the new DOT 4 I think a bit more tolerant.Dont quote me on that.but would suggest new flex pipes instaled/fitted.will mean new brake fluid.think you will find it worth your while.often not taken into consideration.just my thoughts.
