Ford Escort fan thermostat - Colin M
A mate recently bought an M reg 1600 Escort with 60k miles and a FSH. Very happy with the car, but in this hot weather, the temp gauge wanders right up into the red. I had a look and it seems as though the fan doesn't kick in until the engine is too hot.

Where abouts on the block is the thermostat for this fan? I'd like to try changing it before sending him off for further investigation.

In the event of that, any suggestions for decent independant engineer in Guildford?

On my M reg 1.6 LX (has a left to right temp gauge needle) the fans seem to kick in somewhere around the 'A' area of 'NORMAL'.

I know that the L spec cars have a bottom to top needle tho, due to the dash instruments being laid out differently, so it may be slightly different in that case.

Either way the fan seems quite quiet, as the only way in which i know it has come on in traffic with the radio at a modest volume is that i can see the gauge moving back down to around the 'O'.

If the gauge moves into the red, i think there is something wrong somewhere.

I still suspect the thermostat that triggers the fan is out of calibration (ie broke!) as the engine needs to get really hot, water starting to boil, bubbles in the expansion bottle, gauge in the red before the fan starts. As soon as the fan runs, the gauge moves down slightly and all is well. The problem is the fan then switches back off too early and the cycle starts again.

It's as if the stat is triggered 10-20 degrees too high a temperature which is why I'd like to try that first. The engine isn't putting water into the oil or vv so I'm convinced its something simple like the stat. Just need to know where it's located.

On most of the CVH engines it's mounted on the thermostat housing and needs a fairly big socket to get out. Make sure you get the right one as their are several and they have different connections.

Thanks Jim, will look tonight.

The switch for the fan could possibly located under the water pipe which runs across the front passenger side-ish along the top of the radiator and is usually orange in colour. I have replaced on or two with similar symptoms

I may be wrong but would expect to find it near thermostat or on rad close to top hose.its coming in late so will mean a new.
sender unit for fan.

Sorry for delayed response- watching rooney + co doing a good job. If I am correct, the orange sensor connector could be bridged with an in-line fuse, if this brings the fan on, then this is your switch. You may need to remove the air filter top box to see where I mean

I think point made was fan didnt kick in untill very hot.this implies the stat is not working correctly.if inline fuse blown wont work at all.?

If the thermostat is not working properly, the easiest way to test it is to submerge it in a kettle and see if it opens at the right temp which should be printed on the stat itself.( should be around 96deg) Attach a bit of string where it should open and have a good look when the kettle boils.- If this is Ok, then check 12v is going to the switch. If this is OK the fault must lie in the switch

8 valve or 16 valve? 8 valve switch is on t/stat housing, 16v switch in top hose. Set to come on at around 104 degC. Have had probs with filler caps not sealing properly which brings boiling point of coolant down to normal (100degC) so fan doesnt cut in until coolant spewing all over the deck. If the stat is older than a couple of years change it anyway with genuine Henry item, likewise antifreeze.

Thanks Andrew and others. He has the 16v model. What fooled me was there is a thermostat right on top of the water pump housing on the end of the engine block. Shorting out this stat didn't trigger the fan to run, so I thought there might be something more tricky.

After Andrew's tip, I looked and sure enough, there is another stat mounted (rather oddly) on a spur on the top hose.

Changing that has the fan kicking in at just above mid scale on the temp gauge and running properly now. Thanks again.

A couple of decent garages in the Guildford area. Peter Silvesters & sons on the Worplesden Road, reliable, honest and decent prices.

Or try Peter Waugh off Stoke Road.

Hopefully after nearly 5 years the problem has been sorted.

Forgive me, but the cynic in me thinks this is an advert. Can you confirm you have no connection with the places you're recommending.
