Should DRLs switch off when you switch to headlights?

Both my Vauxhall Zafira and Hyundai i10 have daytime running lights. On both vehicles, the DLRs switch off when my side lights or headlights are switched on. I've observed that some vehicles have daytime running lights that stay on, even at night, when other lights are switched on. Is this a new automotive regulation that I am unaware of?

There is no legislation that prohibits DRLs being on at the same time as headlights. Some manufacturers use a combined headlight and DRL set up while others have them separated, and in the case of the former it is usual that the DRLs will dim when the headlights are switched on.
