I own a 2 year renault clio expression, done 29000 miles and has service history with renault. This week my rear brakes failed due to the brake shoes coming loose and disintegrating within the wheel. The dust from the shoes built up and jammed my wheels up. When I took it to the dealer at first they fited a new clutch. when the car jammed again the AA towed the car to the dealer. First question?
Should the brake shoes break up like that on a 2 year old car and is is classed a wear and tear or mechanical failure. I am disputing this with the dealer. They say it is not covered by the warranty.
2nd question?
Having taken the car in to do repairs and fitting a new clutch instead of the brakes how mad should i be that they have returned a car to me that is dangerous to drive. Or Am I getting too emotional
Please give me your views I am at my wits end

1st Question
Almost certainly the brake shoes are not covered under warranty as they are a "disposable" item. However, if it was the brake mechanism rather than the shoe itself to blame, there may well be, at the very least, grounds for a goodwill gesture from the garage. Which leads to:
2nd Question
The very fact that the garage diagnosed the problem of REAR wheels jamming as being a problem with the clutch on a FRONT wheel drive car is very, very worrying and the dealers really should be taken to task over this. If I was you, I'd give my local trading standards a ring and ask for their advice.

This is very wierd.
1st They change the clutch because the rear brakes are faulty? Now i know Renault dealers rank highly in the incompetance league, but come on thats stretching things a bit far. Even the driver would know the difference surely. I can tell when brakes are binding.
2nd Who told why the brakes were binding? or the shoes broke up? The dealer? would they own up to having changed a clutch in error due to the rear brakes? Did they show you the old parts?
I feel there has been some miscomunication along the way here.
The shoes are wear and tear item. They probably broke up because they were binding, getting hot, and the heat broke them up. NOw how this relates to clutch? What did you tell them when you first went in, clutch slipping? not "my fuel consumption has gone thro the roof", not "the perfomance is well down" , Not "I can smell burning from the rear" or any of the other miriad signs that show up well before the clutch goes
How much has this cost? did they charge you for a new clutch?
If they didnt you now have a new clutch free, and the rear brakes have been fixed, and i assume the car is ok now.

If Renault changed the clutch when its the brakes which were broke then there an idiots at the dealership I'd complain to Renault UK (there quite good should get a free service out of it).
The brake problem is a known problem.
The technical note was released in July 2001 as 4081A.
If you want a copy of it to view I'll send you the PDF email me at nospamedwardbarrett_uk@yahoo.co.uk (remove the no spam bit).
Try another dealership there are good uns took me a while to find one but there are good dealerships.

Complain to Renault Uk though and you should get a free service (about £150) from them.
Sorry to here about another Renault incompetance though
|
Renault dealers have a lot of "known faults" to remember so you can't really blame them :)
|
They do try and fix them with technical notices but they do have quite a bit of customer work to sort out.
For the money Renault products are in my mind very good you get very high levels of kit compaired with competiors basic levels and the same prices.

Thank you for all your help. The Renalt Dealership fit a new clutch because they said " I never told them what was wrong with the Car". I worry that they couldn't find this out for themselves. Renault UK finally agreed to pay for the new rear brake shoes but made out that it was a favour on their half. I picked up the Clio on Friday drove it home. Drove to work on Monday and would you believe it, the car starting juddering and a warning light came on. Called the Renault assist out for the 4th time in a week. This time there was a problem with a coil that set off the O2 sensor. Is the car a liability. Should I sellit, what else is areliable small car. I very tired of renault dealers and renault UK. i don't think Im getting 100% customer satisfaction. Could i take the matter further. Would I be taken seriously

I suppose burning brakes & burning clutches smell the same. I imagine a really incompetent mechanic might have made that mistake.
On a Renault maybe they're interchangeable.....
|
Ooh yes - fit the really incompetent mechanic in place of the faulty brake disk. I bet that would cheer LL up.
|
The coils are another infamous problem of the 1.2 usual the ECU updated maps etc need uploading as well.
I would't get rid of the car there very safe cars the Clios.
Try another delearship though you will find a better one and complian to renault uk they arn't very happy with poorly performing dealers and dealers hate to think of them coming round causing them problems as they can loose the franchise.
