G Plate 1.3 Polo Sport. My son tells me after he changed the rear wheel bearings that there were no automatic brake adjusters in the rear drums. Is that correct. The MkII golf had them and the later Polos 91/2 on. It appears, he says, to rely on the hand brake adustment to take up the wear. Regards Peter

I didnt think any car of that date had manually adjusted back brakes.handbrake cable adjustment is for wear of cable.the handbrake does operate the auto adjuster ie handbrake cable should be adjusted correctly in order for the auto adjusters to work properly.

I agree mech1 but I questioned him last night and there were no auto adjusters in his rear drums. I am very familiar with the mechanism and the wedge and spring were not there nor room for them. Very Strange. Regards Peter

My 1988 Polo has auto adjusting rear brakes. Previous models used a cog which needed a screwdriver to adjust from the back plate, through a hole.
I would suggest that your Polo is either not a UK spec model or has been rebuilt from older parts. There never was a 'Sport' model produced for the UK as far as I can remember.
