VW Golf GL TDi 1997 turbo probs - DaveW
can anyone help? At about 80 mph in 5th gear or sometimes if I accelerate hard in a lower gear the power suddenly dips and car then feels as if the bhp has dropped by about 50%. If I switch off restart the engine it rights itself, had the turbo checked and it seems OK. is this an electronics fault? Anyone know?

Sounds like the EGR system malfunctioning to me!

Try a forum search, it's been debated to death here before..

Lack of feedback from the thread originator seems to be getting more common nowadays - more annoyingly.

Searched through all the archived stuff, saw the 3 possibilities of EGR MAF and chip, prayed it wdnt be the MAF, took it to the local VAG dealer who told me that the fault indicated was indeed a faulty MAF meter, replaced this a a pricey £350 and that was after haggling. Got the car back last night, went to work this am put my foot down and guess what at a slightly higher rev, loss of power. Later tried hard acceleration and again at about 4K revs loss of power. Switch off and all is OK again. So much for the diagnostic prowess of the VAG dealership. I wonder if they'll give me my 350 quid back.!

Are you sure that running out of power at 4000rpm is a fault? My 1.9tdi could run beyond that in 1st and 2nd admittedly, but in higher gears there was a noticeable power loss at about 4000 - brick wall effect. If it gives up below 4000, then there might be an issue. Perhaps get someone who specialises in diesel diagnosis (not VW generally) like a Bosch agent.

Apols Ed and DL I'm a novice!but appreciate your helpful hint to research the archives. I thought I was well armed at the dealership but they just looked slightly blankly at me!

If my experience of VW dealers is anything to go by "slightly blank" is good for these guys.

as always

£350 for a maf seems bit steap.
I'm sure you can use a cheap Merc maf sensor which is much more reliable and costs ~£40.

If the car is no better then I would approach the Stealership ASAP. I don't hold out a lot of hope for getting your money back though.

When my previous model Passat 90bhp TDi developed a surging under load(like fuel starvation), my VW dealer changed the maf (approx £200 3-4 years ago), but the symptoms remained. Took it back, they said they couldn't reproduce the problem so I took the Service Manager out there and then to demonstrate; without prompting he refunded the full cost...
(Eventually the problem was traced to faulty wastegate controller)

This morning I tried it again under stringent test conditions ie on the M25 during rush hour. OK up to exactly 2800 revs and then power loss.

Thanks for all the handy hints I rang the dealership this morning, quote " Oh we've had a few problems with MAFs recently bring it in and we'll have a look at it " which didnt exactly inspire me with confidence, so Monday morning back it goes and I will report back.

Hi Dave, I've been searching through the archives to see if anyone has had this problem, I have a 1998 1.9 TDi with exactly the same symptoms. My power loss is such that up a steep hill, I can't get beyond 40MPH. I find that if I dip the clutch and rev it several times the power occasionally kicks back in again. The engine sound is different as well whilst it is being sluggish, and the car sounds like an old diesel taxi! I've only had the problems about a week or so but am reluctant to take it straight to VW because of the cost implication as you've found yourself! Did you get to the bottom of the fault?

been in devon so sorry about delay, VW took the car in and traced the problem to a charge pressure control valve solenoid, so replaced this and vacuum hose. Wnated to charge me another 260 quid for this which I didnt pay as they shd have diagosed this fault in the first place, not sure after all this whether there was anything wrong with the air mass meter in the first place and it could have all been down to the solenoid, all in all not impressed by the VW dealership so next time I am going back if I can avoid it. Sounds like your problem is worse with so much power loss.

Cheers for that Dave, went into a local garage at first the other day and they plugged it into the diagnostic machine which came up with fault code 00550, which I think means ignition problems. It's now gone to a diesel specialist as I can't afford VW repair prices! The garage it went to was up a steep hill which I just about made doing 20mph all the way, and got beeped at as I think everyone behind me thought I was a sunday driver....! Thanks for your help, Gavvers

Golf TDi bluemotion 2009 plate
Whilst running the engine switches off - eventually does not start.

Hi, could someone please help and advise me: I have recently bought a golf diesel - bluemotion model on 09 plate. The mileage is around -115k. I bought the car just under a week ago, privately so no return policy !

I drove the car 40 miles on route back - I started the car the other day and I heard like a missing sound after a few minutes and then the engine turned off. I restarted the engine and a few seconds later it switched off. Third time the car wouldn't start. So I left it. The next day I checking the water and oil, which was fine. The car started but the same problem accurd.

To me it sounds the car is being starved fuel - but wanted to see if someone has had the same issue ?
