Sorry if this might be more appropriate for discussion.

I'm vaguely toying with the idea of an Audi 100 2.8 that I've seen, looks pretty good and is pretty cheap.

I seem to recall that this car had the 2.8 litre VW VR6 for the first couple of years of production. If I'm right, this would be chain driven (a big plus on a luxobanger). Can anyone confirm this please?

Cannot answer your question, but having just bought one of these (with the straight 5 2.3 engine with cambelt change costing £400!), can confirm that it is a superb luxobanger. The saloon versions seem to be available about 300-700 at that age. Make sure that the onboard computer is working!

Best way to answer that question is to ring your local Audi garage!

David,
IIRC the 2.8 in the 100 and later seen in the MkI A6 is a "standard" V6. The VR6 engine, as installed in the Corrado, is closer to 2.9 in capacity and I don't think it was ever installed in the 100/A6.

Chad is correct.

It is the Audi V6 engine - 2.4,2.6,2.7,2.8 litre variants.

I undestand you need to watch for valve/head problems around 100k miles...

The Golf VR6 uses a 2.8 and the Corrado VR6 uses a 2.9.

I am not sure if it is the same engine in the Audi (I would presume so though)

The Golf VR6 uses 2 chains and 4 hydraulic tensioners. I have just had mine changed at a cost of £500 from a main dealer as it was chattering a bit. They are supposed to last the lifetime.

From the HJ Car-by-Car Breakdown:

"Problems emerging of stretched timing chains on VR6s and chains actually breaking at around 90,000 miles."

I remembered this, being a Golf VR6 owner.

I used to have an Audi 100 2.0E. Great car, if somewhat underpowered. Still is, if the new owner has looked after it; I told him I reckoned it was good for half a million miles.

Just to clarify;

The Golf III used the 2.8 (2792cc) version of the 15 degree V \"VR6\" engine whilst the Corrado used the 2.9 (2861cc) version of same.

The Audi 100/A6 uses a 2.8 (2771cc) standard 90 degree V6.
