This all depends on your budget and the type of vehicle you're looking for. A history and data check such as HPI or similar is essential to check for insurance write-off status and outstanding finance. If you are looking to spend a large amount on a used car and want an independent mechanical inspection then companies such as the AA and RAC offer vehicle inspections to check for potential problems, which may well be of value to you for peace of mind.
