When I returned to my car yesterday afternoon in the supermarket car park I found a large deposit (8" dia) of guano onthe middle of the roof. When I looked closer I found that the roof has actually been dented by whatever was contained in the guano. The dents are about 6mm deep, but the paint has not cracked. Could one of the dent specialists sort this, or is it an insurance claim?

Must be quite an expensive (or beloved) car. Is the dent shallow sided or does it look more like its been hit with a center punch?
I assume you washed the car before examining the dents rather than just poking the affected area ;)

8" diameter guano, 6mm deep dent? what kind of birds do you have round there? where do you live? Need to know so I can avoid it - it sounds a dangerous area.
|
Sounds more like a fallout splash from the paint spillage on M6 to me.
|
Them pesky Emu's. Imagine that landing on your head!
Now one of them has learnt to fly the others will surely follow.
|
Think positive!
Now we know 'guano' gets past the filter.

Shhhhh! Or else they'll turn it into one of those 'moderator only' words

I have no problem if you want to issue forth guano in your posts. Business as usual.....

Sure it wasn't something unmentionable from one of those tin birds?

Reminds me of that old joke

No emu or ostrich jokes, I'm afraid BUT a warning - depending what the 'goose that laid the golden egg' - as it were - was eating, there can be some serious acidity in guano. Best to keep the wax topped up, as well as keeping some wet-wipe type things in the boot, for these eventualities - wipe the offending muck off ASAP once you see it - I've known top coats to be damaged overnight.
Also, as summer approaches for you northern types, get one of those cardboard sunscreens - makes far more sense than parking under trees 'for the shade'... Birds like shady trees too!

You couldn't begin to understand how disappointed I am with this thread. Not at all what I expected from the title. :-(
While working in Florida with a colleague we parked a rented car under a shade tree in the staff car park at the airport for the day. When we got back we discovered why we had found a space so easily. The local birds roosted in the tree and the car was covered. Really plastered, several layers and baked on hard.
We ruined a credit card scraping a hole big enough to see through to drive. It was so bad that having driven to the nearest car-wash there was still some left. We put the car through 3 times before it all came off, and the paint on the roof was noticeably marked. The rental return agent didn't notice luckily, and we didn't hear any more about it.

Dent by guano? or did the bird that left the deposit dent the roof fighting its reflection?. It was a wagtail that made a good mess of the bonnet of Dad's Victor 35 or so years ago.

I always wondered why many parked cars in Oz had plastic bags over the door mirrors.....until I parked outside a frieds house one weekend. The is a delightful tiny bird called a Superb Fairy Wren, about the size of your thumb and goes around in small groups of 5-8 birds, mostly dull brown females but usually a single male which bright electric blue colouring.
The male bird gets quite agitated if he sees another male in full breeding colours and will fight like mad. I returned to my car to be met with bird guano down both front doors and the plastic door mirror housings scratched and a single tiny bird attacking his reflection in the (still intact) mirror.
Always covered up the door mirrors after that.

GGOG Oh yes I CAN understand your disappointment - it is shared by me :)

Had a Robin attack the kitchen window for hours. He was fighting the red washing up brush on the inside window sill.
|
Well, washing up brushes should show more respect!

RF,

Bet you were happy the Robin had only one front wheel?
