can anyone please help me. on friday night i was hit up the rear end. the other car was only doing about 20-25mph when he hit me. the tow bar saved my car from major panel damage all i got was a slight mark on the bumper or so i thought.... the guy was going to pay for the damage himself. but when i went to the garage to get cost of damage the bloke asked me to open the boot. to my shock the guy who hit me has only hit me so hard that the inside of the boot has been pushed upwards and i think slightly inwards... im i right in thinking that the car will have to go on a gig. or may the insurance write it off????? its a 1994 2.5 v6 with 93k on clock... please help me if you can

you may be lucky i am just in the process of sorting a rear shunt it needs a new back panel but its only tin damage and was hit by a van and shoved under a lorry at a junction its got bonnet damage and boot the boot poped open but i can pull it out needs a new bumper tho
dont worry about it only should be cosmetic damage

Impossible to say without a thorough inspection and possibly taking some measurements.
Some towbars actually bolt to a rear suspesion member and the impact may have resulted in damage to suspension components.

"only 20-25 mph" - you do a lot of damage at this speed! You need to let your "estimator" have a good look and see just what has been damaged. Did you have your brakes on when you were hit, or did you see it coming in the rearview mirror and let your car move forward to lessen the impact, then re-apply the brakes to bring it to a halt? Make sure that your car is properly assessed for damage.

Your back end could be way out of alignement, toe, castor and camber-wise.
I think you\'re best going through the insurance if the samage is that severe and not limited to trim, or a mirror, or something else easy to replace.
tell them straightaway, as failure to notify immediately, could leave them to refuse your claim and the man can say clear off when he hears the final price leaving you nowhere to turn but the courts.

told my insurance next day. the tow bar is bolted in 4 places two bolts are to the front of the boot near boot catch and two are at the back of boot about 12" from back seats. all 4 bolts have moved. also my n/s/r outer light cluster is no longer flush with the inner light. but only slightly out... did not see it coming so my brakes were on. also after impact my engine management light come on.

Couple of years ago my Omega Estate was walloped up the rear end at about the same speed.
It had a towbar fitted which lifted the boot floor on one side and reduced the rear offside door gap.
The vehicle was repaired to a very high standard by putting it on a jig and pulling back on the towbar at an opposite angle to which it was hit. Makes sense! Everything came back in line. decent paint job and bingo.
Trouble is with towbars whilst you look at it as a sort of protection it does transfer the impact energy into the body via the boot floor and chassis rather than spreading it across the rear panels.

Yes, I hadn't thought of it that way before - bypassing the many thousands of pounds of research and development of the car's crumple zones etc...I'd always felt it was a handy thing to have in a shunt.
Mind you, it saves me having to have parking sensors to protect the bumper... :-)

well car has been looked at by local vauxhall repair garage. sent off to insurance company. cost of repair is £1'657 plus wot ever else they find. the insurance has only gone and approved the repair. that aint bad seeing that its a 1994 2.5 v6 with 94k on the clock. my insurance firm (tesco) say they will allow upto 60% of value of car. wot the hell have they valued mine at cus i bet i would'nt be able to sell it at there valuation.
