Our Galaxy Tdi (2002) has smoke/steam pouring out of the auxiliary heater/small exhaust underneath. Its very dramatic and looks serious. Has anyone any ideas???
Thanks

my fathers 52 galaxy tdi (90 bhp) which he is now geting rid off, has been full of faults.
The ford galaxy seems to be the worst of the 3 (Vw/Seat/ford).
Cant help with your exact problem, but take it easy as the engine mounts went at 45,000 miles!

This is from a Ford TSB (Technical Service Bulletin):
TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN No.118/2000
Model: Galaxy with 1.9 TDI engine with booster heater or auxiliary heater, built from 27.06.1997 to 10.09.1999 (build code VR to XJ)
Markets: All
Subject: Dense black smoke coming from the exhaust pipe of the booster heater
Summary
Should a customer exprtess concern about black smoke coming from the booster heater. the probable cause may be:
1. Brief, light emission of smoke during start-up and after run of the booster heater (approx. 10-20s).
Cause: One off emission of black smoke resulting from the design of the booster heater. No further action required.
2. Light emission of smoke at low ambient temperatures and high humidity.
Cause: If white smoke appears at the exhaust pipe when the vehicle engine is running, then water vapour is the cause. No further action required.
3. Thick, continuous emission of grey smoke.
Cause: Booster heater metering pump is faulty. Excessive deposits in the burner of the additional heater. Burner is over saturated with unburned fuel.
Remedy: Install a new booster heater metering pump and, if necessary, a new booster heater.

Your vehicle is newer than this but sounds like a similar problem.

Out of interest, do any ordinary VW diesels such as Golfs and Passats have these auxilary heaters?
|
No they don't need them as their cabins are like sardine cans! The palacial expanses of the Sharan/Alhambra/Galaxy have resulted in VW designing an extra heater system to aid warming the cabin on cold days!

Ivor:
Thanks for that - it makes sense and it's one less thing to go wrong given VW's rubbish quality at the moment!

Many cars of all makes(including Ford & VW) use auxiliary heaters in extremely cold countries. These are usually plumbed into the water system of the heater to give more output than the engine can supply. They are diesel or petrol fired and some can be run independent of the engine to pre-warm the vehicle-just like an electric one. Most are made by Behr or Eberspacher.

Well I read the handbook and found the relevant 25 amp fuse. Removed it and the smoking stopped. Vehicle needs service next month and I 've been offered an amazing trade in for a new Mazda MPV. Thanks for the advice.

Are you going for the Mazda in petrol or diesel form?
