2 year old disco done 36000 miles needs attention to brakes .it wanders a bit when stopping hard .discs are a bit grooved but still plenty thickness, pads not at the limit yet (all original from new),dealer wants £575+vat to renew all at service.landy original parts can be bought for £312 inc vat or lockheed parts for under£200,any problems with lockheed parts and would it affect warranty .also if enough wear left is it possible to polish original discs back to smooth and use again

I'd have the parts replaced as required at an independant workshop (find a good one by reccomendation) and ask them to use quality aftermarket replacement parts, such as Motoquip, Mintex etc etc

I wouldn't pay £575+VAT for the job, put it that way!

thanks dl I didnt intend to ,thats why I was wondering about lockheed parts and whether the original discs could be polished and reused ,has anyone done this and if so how did it last.there is an engineering shop near me and I can get the rest of the job done ok. thanks for your comments

Hopefully someone will come along and advise the min. width for Discovery discs, not much spare meat on modern discs especially as yours need skimming as well.
Brakes work hard on a disco and you stand a good chance of warping the discs if they're too thin - stopping a couple of tons at 70mph generates an awful lot of heat.
I'd replace the discs and pads at your friendly indy, don't be tempted to keep the old pads.

Discoverys have brakes?

Braking hard in a Disco always gives me the willies. They don't inspire confidence.
Anyway, don't bother with skimming. Go to the Mintex on-line catalogue, I'm sure they'll list discs and pads on there. I would suggest somewhere under £200 for all parts.

Discoverys have brakes?

was going to make the same comment it must be a deluxe model or a limited edition then(;-P)

It wont be a good idea to have the disc`s skimmed.if the disc`s are under manufacturers spec you run the risk of.not only disc warping but brake fade as well
brake fade on a motor that weight would be the difference between a smash and slowing down in order to prevent a smash.
I do not believe in compromising on price for renewing brake parts.I always buy the original parts.I dont mind on other parts ie not to do with steering or brakes but I reckon its asking for trouble if you dont.and bearing in mind buying cheaper it may not last as long so you have to pay out yet again before you need to.Just my opinion?.

hi ,skimming is now ruled out so should it be original manufacturer parts or lockheed etc? what would the difference be in quality ?who make discs and pads for original fitting?are they not all made to a minimum standard .opinions please

Any braking product from any recognised aftermarket parts supplier will be fine. The friction material will meet or exceed OE spec.

Buy with confidence. Mintex gets my vote.

Lockheed is one of the best.it is poss they make discs for discovery under licence from manufacturer.so it could be your disc`s are lockheed. But ask your dealer in case your motor is under warranty.it should state on the master cylinder what make brakes are ie as long as same make is used should not matter where purchased.main dealer is always more xpensive.

thanks all ,will order lockheed parts in the morning .homer is going to fit them for £30 so thats a bit of a saving ,job done for under £200

There - that's the way to save £400!

£30 to fit Disco front discs? That's a good price.
