This is the last time I will ever talk about our vauxhall carlton!.
We are scrapping it tonight as the continual problems are costing us a fortune and after all it is 13 years old!
Anyway we have a dealer who is coming to collect it tonight he has said he will drive it away. However it has a SORN notice on it. This dealer said that if he puts trade plates on it this is OK he also said that he will give us a receipt saying what time he collected it, it also has no brake lights! Is this legal I just want to be sure we will have no comeback from this!
pS Have bought 2 newer cars a 1999 Vectra 16v. And a 1999 Fiesta 1.25 Zetec. I am so chuffed

Hi,
Definitely not legal to drive it without brake lights, trade plates or no, but not your problem I would suggest.
Cheers,

Assuming you do not think the registration plate it worth selling then complete the VR5 paperwork so it is not your property when he drives away. Under the Sorn and VR5 regulations you must tell them you have scrapped it. Regards Peter

As long as he has his trade plates on then it is okay for him to drive it on the road with regards to the SORN. The fact that it has no brake lights does technically make it unroadworthy and therefore he should not drive it on the road, but once the paperwork is complete it is not your problem as to whether he is willing to take the risk of getting caught or not.
I would suggest though that it is not your place to tell the DVLA that you have scrapped the car. You should only ever do that if it is YOU that takes it to be dismantled at a breakers yard or take it to be weighed in for its metal value. Seeing as you are merely transfering the vehicle to a trader then you should treat the situation and paperwork as such.
