I'm about to buy a Z3 2.8 but have heard that certain models have Nickasil cylinder bores which are prone to wear. Obviously I'm anxious to avoid buying one of these but I'm a bit uncertain as to how to identify them. Can anyone help? Is it all pre 1998 cars that have these cylinder bores or just imported models?
All information gratefully received

I have only heard of the V8s having this problem, did it ever affect inline sixes?

I got this information from the car by car breakdown on this website so I'm not sure. Would be interested to know.

Just type Nickasil into the search at the top and you get loads of info.

Six cylinder models definitely suffered the Nikasil problem. Information can be found at: www.lestac.co.uk/bmw/nikasil.htm

6-cylinder engines made between 1995 and 1998 are affected.
Phone a BMW dealer with the VIN and they should be able to tell you if the car was affected and whether it has had the necessary work done to rectify the problem.

Thanks everyone for the info. Seems the thing to do is check the VIN as mentioned above.
Anyone else who is interested in this, I can recommend the article linked above by Simon Worby, largely demystifies the issue.

Just phoned BMW GB. The Z3 2.8 was not affected.
