Do you still need an international driving licence to drive in Spain? - I have the "old"-style UK paper-only licence, not the new photo one.

I've never bothered with one it is an EU country after all and my old paper licence is the only one I've ever carried and had no problem with Multi National Hire Companies. First Aid Kit, Triangle, Spare set of light bulbs and a spare set of optical glasses all make good sense.

I also carry my insurance certificate. My Insurance company provide a credit card one which is sufficient for obtaining a road tax disk and for producing for the Police. However they also provide a paper version which has a different language section of it which gives the name of a bail bond bearer necessary for Spain and tell you to take this with you.
Crossing France you also need the Registration documents for the car.
The components mentioned by PU I also carry and often wonder if they are akin to a London cabbie who is obliged to carry a bale of straw. However I take no chances and take them with me.

In spain you will be fined on the spot if you have to wear glasses and do not have a spare pair. Happened to my old man.

In the hinterland down south, the locals are far more patient than your average Brit when they encounter a non-local, they are very cool.

I would also add to the above lists that if you are taking a company/lease car abroad you should carry written confirmation that they know you are taking it overseas. Friend learnt that the hard way after a collision in Dunkerque, caused considerable delays and some very unhappy Gendarmarie, not that some of them need much of an excuse to get unhappy!

Sorry to post again so soon.
With regard to driving licences, I would check whether IDP is required, certainly was in Balearics up to five years ago, couldn't get a hire car without one.
I believe that different rules apply depending on which licence you hold, old style and green paper, IDP required; pink paper, supposed to be EU friendly, IDP dependant on country; new photo licence OK BUT paper appendix MUST be carried.
Sure a quick look at DVLA site will clear it up.
