Within the article on Jaguar's X-type Estate and comparison with BMW rivals I noticed the following:

"how can BMW boast of "exclusivity" when there are more 3-series about than Ford Mondeos?"

Discuss...

Perhaps they mean exclusive use of outside lane on motorways (places both arms over head and plugs ears....)

Both BMW and Jaguar can certainly boast of "exclusivity" by which they really mean, affordabiliy. It's the price of a new car that excludes most people from being able to buy them. However, these are are well made cars with with (mainly) multi-cylinder, complex engines and suspension etc. and usually high quality construction and finish. So I suppose the price is justified, but they remain out of my reach so I'll stick with the Focus, enjoy the excellent drive and spend the difference on a nice holiday or two.

Yes, I gather that in quite a few months last year the 300-series outsold the Mondeo. Most will have be bought by companies for use by sales reps and the like. They are not very exclusive at all nowadays and no doubt that will impact on used prices over the next couple of years.

I've also read recently that Mercedes outsells Fiat in the UK.

The only surefire way to ensure exclusivity these days is to buy a new Rover.

A new City Rover would indeed guarantee exclusivity, but the Rover 75 is a rather nice car that sells well.

Yes it's a nice car, Leif, but only the terminally unambitious could say it sells well:

This is admittedly quite an old link. The 75 sold just over 30,000 units last year. That might make it the best selling Rover but with volumes as they are, that's akin to being the world's tallest midget.

Is it just me that BMWs don't age well?

If you mean that they start to look a little care-worn I agree with you. They generally look good up to six years, then it all depends on how well they have been looked after, by this time they will be off the main dealer's lot unless they are immaculate and a new model will be in.

Our White 1996 316 isn't aging too badly, it's got a bit of rust starting to show around the wheelarches, but it's going into a bodyshop soon to get that sorted out. Apart from that it looks immaculate, almost as good as the day we bought it.

It still doesn't look too old fashioned either, despite having been replaced, I reckon that the next 3 series will make it look a bit more out of date, but then a MK1 Mondeo looks just as dated when compared to the MK3...
