If I have protected no claims discount and I make a claim, do I lose a year (even thought it’s protected!).

Just noticed a family member’s renewal hasn’t effectively credited a year for the year they had a bump.

Indeed - the insurer sneakily ups the 'starting' premium before the PNCD is taken in account. I learned that the hard way when I had a shunt in my old Micra early in my driving life in the late 90s. My initial PNCD policy (part of the deal to buy the car) went up from £350ish in year 1 to £440, then to £550 then to £640.

I looked at changing and the quotes were around £1k. Only after year 4 did it start dropping again once the 'effect' on that one relatively minor bump (no damage to the other car, £600ish to mine).

With insurance, mostly its head they win, tails we lose.

Of course it does, why else would they push you to pay for it?

The info will be somewhere in the documents.

With 9+ years (the max they recognise) of NCD via a protected policy i can have up to two claims before it affects my NCD, for those with fewer years NCD the number of claims before NCD drops gets progressively fewer.

Of course protected NCD doesn't mean the premium won't rise following a claim and one would expect it to, so whether to protect the policy will always be a bit of a gamble.

My son had five years no claims when he moved to Aviva two years ago. He’s got a General Accident letter as proof. His renewal has just landed and it’s showing six years no claim when he was expecting seven, He did, however, made a claim this year (year two of being with Aviva). He’s been with Aviva for the last two years. So they’ve either got it wrong or penalised him for the. accident.

Protected NCD is a feel good factor and don't mean much in reality.

Your premium will go up if you claim, irrespective of how many NCD you have got.

Managed to work it out! As I’ve asked for proof of no claims a month before the insurance expires, I haven’t actually earned a full year yet! Pretty obvious really!!
