Citroen C4 Picasso - Car Recall not notified. Damaged engine - CT1989
Hi all

Me and my partner purchased a Citroen C4 Picasso in January 2023 from a well known car business and things were going great.

However, before going on holiday this summer we thought it would be best to get it serviced so took it to the dealer we got the car from. Upon being serviced, they advised us that there was corrosion on the engine and the car would require a new engine. They told us that Citroen had a recall out on the car (of which we were not aware of) in order for the timing/wet belt to be replaced. They advised that due to the fact that this hasn’t been actioned it has caused serious engine issues. The dealer had run a diagnostics on the car before sending to Citroen in order for the recall to be fitted.

We did not receive anything to advise of a recall needing actioned. Contacting Citroen they advised they sent letters in March 23, December 23 and March 24. The car was also in for an MOT in September 2023 at the dealer we bought from and we were not made aware of a recall needing done.

Upon getting in contact with Citroen they took the car in done a free replacement of the recall. However, they advised us the car was ready to be picked up and driven away. This even after we were told the car was in drivable and would require a full new engine.

We contested this with Citroen but they have washed there hands of the damag that had been caused and advised that we would need to pay the full cost of the new engine (£8k+) and there would be no help given whatsoever. This being completely against the guidance we have been advised by the dealer who said that due to the issues relating to the recall then Citroen should be liable to cover the cost.

I wonder if anyone else has been in this situation regarding this?
Or even if they have any advice on what to do going forward as we had not been made aware of this and it has seriously damaged our car and is now not drivable and we have been left with a large sum of money to pay through no fault of our own.

Thanks in advance

I’m a little confused about corrosion of the engine and a recall for the wet belt . Presumably you drove it to the garage for service, and now it doesn’t work?

How old is the vehicle?

How many miles on the vehicle?

I can guess which engine it is but can you confirm its the 1.2 petrol engine.

Wet timing belt replacement interval on those was reduced down to 6 years / 62500 miles for arduous use.

Citroen would have sent the recall letters to the address the DVLA has on the system for the vehicles registered keeper, do you have a V5C in your name with with your address?

All the original wet belt recall basically was - measure the belt width with the official tool, check the brake vacuum pump & update the software to monitor the vacuum pump.

The car is a 2018 model 72000 miles on the clock It is a 1.2 engine that’s correct. Yes the v5C is in our names and we are the registered keepers however we never received any correspondence about this but have received all other DVLA issued letters etc

Yes. We had no problems with it bar an engine management light appearing which is why we thought it best to put it in for its service before going on holiday. We were then told of a fault within the car and a diagnostic was run. Then advised that the car was unroadworthy and that it would require a new engine due to the damage that had been caused

Are you sure they said 'corrosion'? Valve carbonization has been an issue and in this thread a dealer allegedly said a new engine was needed before the owner had the valves decoked.
