Audi A4 Avant - Advice - vibrations - Melissa Lloyd
Hi

We have recently had a breakdown and it resulted in our clutch and flywheel being replaced. However since the car has been returned there is a very visible vibration through the car which can be seen and felt when inside. The gear stick shakes, the vibrations are felt through the seat and you can see things shaking in the footwell. Ie water bottle

We had this work done via a breakdown firm, and since had them check the car given concern linked to the work done.

The other garage has said it is our anti roll bar linkages causing the vibration. But being novices and sceptic on the advice as the garage has been appointed by the breakdown firm as an “independent review” we wanted to get other opinions.

On our reading of the faults with anti roll bar linkages the vibration seems to be when the car is driven. But the vibrations felt are when the car is idle, and when neutral. It can be felt when in gear though.

We wondered if we could get thoughts on this?

Thanks in advance

If the vibration is At stationary, it can’t be the anti roll bar bushes . Did the car definitely get a new flywheel when the clutch was replaced?

It’s on the invoice to say they did

Something out of balance . Possibly clutch or flywheel. Any idea of the make of the parts fitted ? Was it ok prior to the clutch fitting ? It’s feasible that there’s an engine fault . Any malfunction light showing ?

I was told that they were Audi only parts. The garage at the time said they ordered the parts originally and for the year and model there were 2 possible options and there was a difference between the two of 8 mil (I think that was the measurement) and so when the initial parts arrived tried those and realised wrong size, and had to other the other and only place to order from was Audi direct. The invoice doesn’t specifically say the size or part other than clutch kit and fly wheel replacement

The garage that did the clutch replacement did return the vehicle with circa an inch of coolant only, which we’ve raised in our concerns as this is far from the minimum level.

Prior to this there wasn’t a problem, 2months prior we had a service, 4 new tyres, 4 break pads and 2 break discs replaced it was a dream. Then suddenly clutch went. But certainly no vibrations etc before

No faults showing either

Something else that may possibly be an issue , is worn engine mounts . Is this a 2.0 tdi engine ?

Yes it is

.... the vibrations felt are when the car is idle, and when neutral. It can be felt when in gear though.

Then it is obviously nothing to do with the suspension. Or the gearbox. Or the propshafts or wheel bearings or anything else the disingenuous garage is trying to fob you off with. There must be something out of balance, and as there should have been no interference with either the engine's crankshaft which drives the clutch and flywheel mechanism, or the gearbox input shaft, they must have done something wrong or fitted a faulty part.

But I am also curious about what exactly the 'breakdown' was which needed a replacement clutch...and flywheel? You can usually limp home in low gear when your neglected worn slipping clutch becomes terminal. What is the mileage?

Hi

We were 3 and a half hours from home visiting family and so when the engine felt dodgy moving gears etc it wasn’t safe to put the family through motorway travel, and that is where the clutch replacement came from.

They told us it was both the clutch and flywheel to be replaced and given the car was far from
Home have had to trust in that advice. We are going to book a second opinion on the garage we had the service at in October, but just seeking thoughts at the moment from people more knowledgeable than us using Google as our guide.

Mileage is 108,000

Thanks

It sounds like a problem with the flywheel to me. It certainly isn't anything tomdo with the suspension.

Given the apparent competence of whoever did the clutch replacement, I wouldn't be surprised if they've fitted the wrong part or fitted it incorrectly.

Could it be a worn or loose engine mount?

Whatever it is could turn into a real ball ache. Hopefully the local garage can provide a 100% certain diagnosis without dismantling the car. They won't be able to tell if a wrong part has been fitted without some dismantling and that will cost. The OP then has to get the breakdown garage to accept the diagnosis and deliver the car back to them (3.5 hours away). And collect when it's fixed. That's 14 hours of driving unless they can make a break of it visiting family.

Hopefully it's a loose engine mount. Otherwise, it sounds like hassle.

Could it be a worn or loose engine mount?

Quite possibly. I found this interesting short u-tube about the A4 B8 vibration problem which the OP might find useful. I don't suppose they have access to the parts that were replaced, but they should be able to inspect the engine mountings.
