With many cars having multiplex wiring and computers that control one thing being able to control another, here are some of my ideas.
1, If you leave a door open and try to lock the car, the horn will beep to warn you.
2, Dipped beams switch to side lights when stationary for a period and opened the door. It really annoys me when drivers keep their lights on while chatting to passengers as they drop them off.
3, How about brake lights that go off after so long stationary, or a warning buzzer to alert the driver that they are wrecking their brake discs?
Anyone got any more ideas? Maybe we will see some on the next big Citroen!

How about fog lights that switch off when there isn't fog!

Davy S.
Oops, where did that screw go!!
|
How about justing banning front foglights lights altogether and getting rear ones to switch off when the main lights are turned off(I know most cars do now).
A friend who had a new Renult Laguna tried to start the car but it wouldn't do anything, no starter motor, nothing. Turns out that he left it in gear and dind't find that out until the AA man turned up and hour later. Now if the car had written on the screen "Car in gear" or said something then he would have know. There's no point in the technology if it isn't used properly.

As the luguna has a switch on the clutch as well it means the car was clever enough to realise it would shoot off if started and there was a complete dimwit behind the wheel who has no right to hold a driving license. Perhaps a sign saying "take your driving test" would have been better.

Hey its a Renult the switch might not have been working !
Infact he sold it after 9 months, due to the fact he could never drive it (in the dealership all the time having things repaired).

Things like "what do you mean there is nothing wrong with it when I turn this wheel it veers off the road I tell you"

From what he told me there where more new parts on it than were original.

And annoy others with continual horns going off left right and centre.

Total myth. Previous discussions have concluded no harm is done by leaving the pads in contact with the discs when hot.

Ooooh, may have to take you to task on that one. Used to be a naughty person and hold my Civic VTi (company car at the time) on the footbrake, which given the way I drove it (with enthusiasm) wasn't the best move. Warped three sets of discs in 18,000 miles before the Honda garage mentioned this to me so I made a conscious effort to stop. The next set of discs lasted 40,000.
I pity the poor soul that purchased that particular fully serviced ex-fleet car. It was driven like it had an on/off switch rather than a throttle for over 60,000 miles. It was gasping for air when I handed it back!

Must be a Civic thing ;o) Plenty of mixed discussion about Civic Discs and warping, for\'s and against\'s of leaving foot on the brakes here:-

"1, If you leave a door open and try to lock the car, the horn will beep to warn you."
Much lamented late Disco would do this if you tried to lock it with a door open - apparantly the wiring loom was out of an M reg Allegro so I doubt whether it was multiplex.

i know certain cars monitor the tyre pressures of the main road tyres, but i wish mine would monitor the spare, and save me having to evacuate the boot, and pull up the floor every two weeks!.

Count yourself lucky. If I want to check the pressure of my spare I have to remove it from the tyre well. Vauxhall in their infinate wisdom decided to mount the spare face down in the boot, so the valve is inacessable. For Vauxhall, it is a poor design flaw.
|
You could always use an extender on the valve,
or carry a cheap pump in the boot.

I read often, only post occasionally

Generally, being lazy, I just do the thumb test on the spare. Press the side wall, and if the tyre feels firm enough, then that'll do me to get me home or to a garage.

As regards Total myth could you post the address of the previous thread on this - I too am not convinced.

Ok, perhaps total myth was an exaggeration, but there are several discussions suggesting it is untrue. One of the discussions I came accross can be found here:-
www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=14873&...f
I did find a few more last night - Forum Search, Technical matters forum, and the word "warped" in the message body box. IMHO, there was more technical info posted than not to convince me that it's untrue. Besides which, your brake pads are always in slight contact with the discs even when you foot isn't on the pedal anyway.
|
Unless I missed something here.I noticed no one mentioned warped due to hard braking then hitting a puddle or driving rain. The pads are always in close contact with the disc. Unless I am mistaken most disc`s that are hot may after braking warp due to sudden cooling. only exeptions are air cooled double discs that can resist due to thickness and materials used. But then I may be wrong? Can`t see it happening at standstill foot on brake

It was on the last one!!. Xantia sounds a beep if you try and lock with a door not closed. Did that not carry forward to the C5?
|
I locked the doors while open, but was a distance away from the car, I noticed the light flashing differently. I didn't hear a beep.
|
|
Err, yes the C5 does beep at you.
Given the sensitivity of the blip thing, this event usually occurs when you are climbing over the back seat of the car with the keys in your pocket and you are trying to move sleeping kids into house without waking them!
Still not a bad idea

Every Vauxhall I've had with central locking (4) 'bounces' the locks if you try and lock the car with a door open. Works just as well and quieter than a beeper. Of course being a Vauxhall, you forget about the 'feature' and assume the central locking is playing up ;-)
