Sorry if this is old ground that I'm covering here, but does anyone have any recommendations for cheap & reliable online car insurance brokers ?
I'm looking to insure a Seat Ibiza 130 for fully comp. + protected no claims (have about 6 years no claims discont at mo), but it has to include BUSINESS use. Nonsense like AA or RAC cover thrown in is useless to me as is any other 'value added' guff that just bumps up the price. Oh, and I'm 27&3/4 btw.
Current best quote is from budget at a whisker under £500, which seems quite good to me, but does anyone know of anything better ?
ta,
Humdinger.

Always found www.confused.com to be good, not used them for a while though, and have heard that they're not as good as they used to be. Worth a try though.

Try Tesco, cheapest for me after a fairly thorough search
|
I'd second Tesco as worth a try...

Frizzell if you are a public sector employee, if not Liverpool and Victoria - same company! Gave the best quotes for both me and the wife. Business use automatic, no mileage limit, spouse cover automatic. They give you a rough quote via the internet, call for a detailed one, mine ended up cheaper! £370 for an A2 with 3 years NCB, driving licence held for 17 years.

Elephant has came up trumphs for me, for the third year in a row.
|
Concur with you about Elephant. Admiral/Elephant are very good for London postcodes I believe.
|
Not sure if this is of any help but my best quote last year was through www.peopleschoice.co.uk. The policy I got is underwritten by HSBC Ireland.
I also have another policy with Tesco, which came out best when adding a young driver as the main driver of the vehicle.
Not sure about how the business use would be viewed by either company though, sorry.
Just a note - no idea how they are with claims, which is often the most important information that you need to know?

I have found e-sure to be the cheapest-especially when you apply online. They were certainly cheaper for me than Tesco.
|
My insurance was due in December and, as usual, I trawled around to find the cheapest. What I did discover was that quotes were far better by 'phone than by the Internet, despite what the 'net companies would have you believe.
Liverpool Victoria were the cheapest, and would not give a definitive quote online. I ended up with my usual insurer, Zurich, as the price differential was negligible. Zurich's online quote - I tried this out of interest - was £200 more than my renewal figure.
|
I have been with Privilege for some years and periodically spend hours on the phone looking for something cheaper. Last year I drew a blank, so this year I wasn't going to waste my time. However I saw a reference to a website (whose name escapes me)that trawls various companies for you.One company they came up with which looked promising was esure. I went via a link to the esure website and sure enough they were considerably cheaper - about 20%. To get the best deal you need to apply online.
They give you an instant quote and you can pay online. It only takes a few minutes. I was very impressed.

www.insuredirect.co.uk used to be contactable from a pop-up on this site and the URL is correct - (I have just checked). My partner got a good deal from them for SAAB 9-3. I use the Civil Service link to Liverpool Victoria thru Frizzells; I pay £186 a year full comp on a 2.0l Pug Hdi, 2 named drivers, 75% protected no-claims, 30 days foreign use per year, £100 xs and £40 on the windscreen. In the last 3 years they have paid for 2 windscreens and a £2000 write-off (flood damage). At the last renewal my premium was unchanged from 2002 so I don't shop around much! No connection other than as a customer!

|
Elephant £600 (Group 13/6points/business use/50k miles per year)
Same policy with More>Than.......£2250
So that's where they get their name...
|
No-one has beaten Churchills for me in the last 3 years. SWMBO uses TSB and has done for about 5 yrs, no-one has come close to matching them for her insurance.
|
I think the moral of these answers is you MUST shop around. Ive just renewed with Belldirect (part of Admiral/Elephant/Diamond). Ive never stayed with an insurance company 2 years running due to someone else who might have previously been expensive, suddenly being competitive for me.
Just to show, the most expensive quote I had this time was £1600, the cheapest was £770.
|
Got this one off the BR.
www.insuresupermarket.com/
Compares 50 companies before your very eyes. Pointed to AXA as the cheapest for me. Definately worth a try.

A question from a insurance novice - but is their any other way of insuring your car without paying a private company. Ie, what if one day all the insurance companies decided to stop - what would be the alternative?
{No need to SHOUT!! Which is what you\'re doing by typing soley in UPPER CASE letters. Post amended. DD}

davidvince:
my dad use to work in motor ins.
he says relevant law was Road Traffic Act 1988 (c. 52) section 143 and 144 etc., but may be amended now. so check current status with lawyer.
143.?(1) Subject to the provisions of this Part of this Act?
(a) a person must not use a motor vehicle on a road unless there is in force in relation to the use of the vehicle by that person such a policy of insurance or such a security in respect of third party risks as complies with the requirements of this Part of this Act, and
(b) a person must not cause or permit any other person to use a motor vehicle on a road unless there is in force in relation to the use of the vehicle by that other person such a policy of insurance or such a security in respect of third party risks as complies with the requirements of this Part of this Act.
144.?(1) Section 143 of this Act does not apply to a vehicle owned by a person who has deposited and keeps deposited with the Accountant General of the Supreme Court the sum of £15,000, at a time when the vehicle is being driven under the owner's control.

>>...and keeps depositedwith the Accountant General of the Supreme Court the sum of £15,000 , at a time when the vehicle is being driven underthe owner's control.
Irrelevant I know, but I didn't think this country had a supreme court. I was under the impression that the highest court was (for the moment anyway) the House of Lords.
Returning to the subject, I wonder if anyone does deposit the £15000. It seems a paltry amount considering the possible size of a claim involving death or serious injury.

welliesorter: you learnt something new! here is the definition.
and where you can inquire about how many people deposit the money.
The Accountant General of the Supreme Court, through the CFO, is responsible for the management and investment of sums paid into Court whether by parties pursuing litigation through the Courts or deposited on behalf of people whose financial affairs are under the control and protection of the Court of Protection (for example minors and those mentally incapacitated). Under the Administration of Justice Act 1982 the Accountant General is required to produce an annual account to the end of February in each year which shows the amounts received into Court and the sums paid out. These accounts are certified by the Comptroller and Auditor General and presented to Parliament. The Lord Chancellor appoints the Accountant General as Accounting Officer for Funds in Court. The current Accountant General is also head of the Public Trust Office, an executive agency of the Lord Chancellor?s Department.
Sterling receipts, transfers and credits of interest into Court in the year ended 28 February 1998 amounted to £1.5 billion and sterling payments and transfers out of Court amounted to £1.3 billion. Sterling cash balances exceeded £1.9 billion.
It seems a paltry amount considering the possible size of a claim involving death or serious injury.

welliesorter: update on status of public-trust-office
PAYMENTS IN SATISFACTION
The Government is to amend the Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) that
relate to Payments in Satisfaction (CPR Part 36) and payments made in
to court under order (CPR Part 37) so that the same methods apply to
actions in both the county courts and the High Court. The changes
will take effect from 1 April 2003. These changes result from the
responses received to a consultation paper.
In July 2001 a consultation paper was issued entitled 'Payments In to
Court In Satisfaction Of A Claim', which examined the current system
that allows a defendant to pay money into court to support an offer
to settle a claim for debt or damages. This was the result of the
Quinquennial Review of the Public Trust Office, now Public
Guardianship Office, one of the executive agencies of the Lord
Chancellor's Department. The Court Funds Office is the office of the
Accountant General of the Supreme Court and its functions include
receiving payments into court in satisfaction of a claim. It was part
of the Public Trust Office Agency at the time of the review, but is
now part of the Court Service Agency.
The consultation paper sought responses as to whether there was a
need to retain the payments in satisfaction system and, if so,
whether this should continue to be managed by the Court Service. It
also considered whether the procedures in the county courts and the
High Court should be brought into line and whether there was a viable
alternative to cash payments being made in.
Analysis of the responses showed the majority of respondents wanted
the system for payments in to be retained; for it to continue to be
administered by the Court Service, and for the rules to be
streamlined so that county court procedures followed those of the
High Court. There was little support for the proposals that
considered alternative methods of payment.
Notes for Editors
1. The Government issued its consultation paper on payments in
satisfaction in July 2001. The paper can be found on the LCD website
at www.lcd.gov.uk.
2. The payments in satisfaction system was considered as an area for
potential change as the Quinquennial review of the Public Trust
Office, now Public Guardianship Office, recommended that the Public
Trust Office should take a strategic decision to move away from
providing specialist client services, some of which are provided by
the Court Funds Office. The Court Funds Office is the office of the
Accountant General of the Supreme Court and its functions include
receiving payments in to court in satisfaction of a claim.
3. The Court Funds Office ceased to be part of the Public Trust
Office Agency on 1 April 2001 with the creation of the Public
Guardianship Office, and is now part of the Court Service, an
executive agency of the Lord Chancellor's Department.

I've had mine with tesco for the last 3 years. Best prices for the younger (male) driver by far, don't know about buisness use though. The online quote is also the best and quickest I have used - makes a difference after putting your address in for the 27th time!!!!!
|
i used www.egg.com who where very good, but have now gone back to Hill House Hammond (not online) as they have been consistently cheaper and are very good to deal with. online insurance is not necessarily cheaper.
|
For a few years I was also with Tesco who are good for mid 20s driver driving in a group 15 car. However, I switched to Privelege when Tescos refused to match the Privelege price even though it was just £30 less on a £600 premium. (and I had just made a claim through Tesco for a £600 replacement windscreen).
|
Esure give business cover "for free" to most people - so well worth a quote. Both myself and Mrs MMD are with Esure now, in both cases because they were extremely competitive. And NCD goes up to 75% if you stay with them for 5 years (and started on full NCD).
