Just wondering how consumers can protect themselves? If car histories are falsified.

Well if professional dealers can buy clocked cars and false service histories what hope is there for the average punter. "We buy any car" has a bit of a ring about it and it was a cinch that the crook would be caught,

In this day when you can check mileage on line via MOT histories, I would have thought clocking was impossible.

Dear me,, On line MOT history is my first port of call when looking at used cars.

Very common for cars to be clocked before the first mot .

Or to have a few K knocked off between MOTs.

I suppose, given suitable software and hardware, it may be easier to reduce an indicated mileage than in the days when a mechanical odometer had to be wound backwards ?

Mechanical odometers didn't need to be wound back literally - each digit was on a ring with 0-9, so just dismantle and reassemble, quite quick in many cars - don't ask how I know!

30 years or so ago a distant relative did around 25/30K per year.

Bought a new car every 3 years - disconnected the speedo for 6 months+ every year.

Car serviced at main dealer with an Indie service in between. Cars were well look after and looked like new even after 80/90K but showing half that.

Done a couple of older vehicles back in the day, Austin Rover & Ford - when upgrading to a instrument cluster with the rev counter in, adjusted the odometer to show the cars correct mileage.

Digital mileage “correction” is widely offered and advertised in the UK, yet the actual need to “correct” a mileage is next to non-existent in reality. Clocking is rife again. Doesn’t help that many cars don’t come with a service book these days which belittles the practice of an annual service and that most first keepers merely lease the car and thus have little interest in properly maintaining it.

I find it hard to believe he 'clocked' 2,750,000 miles from a mere 32 vehicles., this would mean an average reduction of 85,937 miles.

He was said to be selling to dealers, how would they not notice the discrepancies?

Were MOT records also falsified? Were all these 3-year old cars with just the one MOT?
