Last year, just 126 XEs were sold in the UK,

I didn't know it was that bad !!!!

I’m quite surprised it was as many as that.
From memory, they stopped producing them for a long while and prioritised the SUV’s.

I've always liked them, particularly the face-lift model with its revamped interior and neater rear, cleverly and cheaply done by fitting slimmer lights. Should have been available with the Ingenium straight-six engine to make it special.

XE, and I think XF, have been out of production since COVID. I think they have recently begun to make them again in small numbers.

They're not the only ones, the Volvo S60 for example hasn't been on sale for about 2 years and only recently became available for order again.

Many manufacturers have pared down the available car ranges. A perfect storm of WLTP (that got rid of most 3 door models) , Covid restrictions, compulsory auto SOS & radar and chip shortages had manufacturers restricting model ranges - generally prioritising more profitable versions. This also upset the cart re supply / demand where supply was the weakest link - hence the strangeness in the new / used car market.

Where it goes -I'm not sure. However there are signs that supply is improving, demand reducing (cost of living crisis?) with some suspended and / or cheaper models re introduced. I'm sitting tight during this madness until things settle a bit.

How did WLTP kill 3 doors? I thought nobody bought them anymore because they're much less practical and only a little bit cheaper?

Every different model had to be expensively tested, as 3 doors were less popular manufacturers generally didn't bother. Almost every 3dr model vanished by the cut off date re WLTP.

I spotted it as for me it's a bit of a problem as in planning retirement we were considering down sizing to one smaller car and with many 5dr cars the B pillar is too far forward (I'm tall!).

The MINI retains 3 doors and for my money looks a much nicer car. The 5 door version just looks wrong. Not much room in the back in any case for passengers to go any distance in comfort

Many manufacturers have pared down the available car ranges.

Depends how successful they are. E.g. Audi A1, A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, etc etc....

Indeed,

I've noticed many basic models are no longer available (eg Skoda "S" models are no longer available). Some manufacturers have consolidated engine choices - eg Kia Xceed only available with 1.5 petrol the 1.0 has been removed. Obviously this means the minimum price into a model is much higher (more profit?).

VW seem to sell a near-infinite range of very similar SUVs starting with 'T'
