Here in Australia if you run over a snake you always check in the rear view mirror to make sure it is left behind on the road. You don't want a surprise when you open the bonnet. Mind you it isn't a good idea to run over a snake anyway if you have any choice in the matter.

I recall seeing many dead snakes from road accidents in rural Australia


Mind you, there has been an explosion in the adder population in the UK, I’m not sure they will need to be a protected species much longer.
