Ford Fiesta Mk 4 - What\'s wrong? - Adam {P}
Hi all,
I recently purchased an N reg Ford Fiesta Ghia but in the (new back then) Mark 4 shape. The car has had a new engine put in which is a 1.25 Zetec-S engine. All in all, the car runs perfectly but there are a few niggling things. Occasionally, when started, the revs will drop to almost stalling point and sometimes the engine will stop. This didn\'t really bother me because pressing the accelerator stoped this. However, recently, on the drive out of my estate (not a mansion estate!) every time I\'ve stopped, the engine has stopped. It doesn\'t always do this and admittedly, after about 5 minutes, NEVER does it leading me to believe it could be temperature related. Also, the car has started to hold high revs even on \'idle\' so instead of idling at 1000 revs, it does it at 2. Again, this is occasional and I\'m not too bothered about that because my Dad\'s Focus did exactly the same thing and then stopped. ANy ideas?

Thanks

I had an Escort that did the same a few years back, I was told it could be a number of things, mostly simple fixes.
It ended up needing a new HEGO sensor, which I believe is something to do with the exhaust gas recirculation.

Hope this helps.

Hego stands for \"heated exhaust gas oxygen\" which has nothing to do with \"EGR\"-exhaust gas recirculation.Your concern is likely to be with your ISC(idle speed control) also known as ABV(air bypass valve). This controls your idle speed-replace or wash out with petrol or white spirit.

it could also be the MAF sensor, as when mine went downhill my 1.25 initially behaved perculiarly when cold and using just the MAF to calculate the fueling.

A failing MAF can be adapted to by the ECU, and in my experience (and that of others) it will really be obvious if you disconnect the battery (to reset the ecu) then drive the car.

Once reset, if you get the following problems, I'm pretty sure it's the MAF. If not, then as others have said you could just check the ICV.

Problems my car had when the MAF was on its way out:

- Occasional stalling when dipping the clutch just prior to coming to a rest
- Fluctuating idle speed (not noticeable on the rev counter, but audiable)
- Running lean when in open-loop fueling mode (started from cold / putting the car under load when hot) and having a serious lack of grunt
- holding revs, and even increasing revs when dipping the clutch at speed
- little or no engine braking

Hope that helps.

Fiestaman.

p.s. if you get your fault codes read, treat them with caution, as it seems the Ford EECV ECU isn't very clever.

I stand corrected on the exhaust recirculation thingy.
New HEGO sensor cured similar symptoms on my Escort back then though.

Good luck with it.

Thanks guys for replying so quickly. All of your comments have been taken onboard and they do sound surprisingly similar. Of course, I know you\'re going to say take it to Ford to be fixed. Damn I hate those guys; £120 for a spare key!

On the basis of my experience with ford mechanics, and their ability (??) to use their WDS2000 system I'd suggest you steer clear of them. Stupid charges just to check fault codes, and then there's no guarantee they'll know where to direct their efforts.

Do some reading about the engine systems on the 'net, and buy a voltmeter - for many of the devices you'll need to check, this will generally be acceptable.

Hmm - my problems appear to have gone even further. I've been meaning to take my car to the garage for ages but thought I could wing it by just letting it warm up for two minutes before driving off but before it nearly cost me!

I was ready for turning right and took advantage of what normally would have been a perfectly large enough gap so (within the speed limit), I floored it so that I didn't cut this guy up....or should I say tried to floor it. The car moved, albeit very slowly and revs were high. It was similar to the original problem I mentioned in earlier postings but this time it was different. The car didn't seem to have the power the same as before but the revs were high which hasn't really happened before - and although no-one else noticed it, the engine sounded almost raspy. Maybe it was me imagining things. Needless to say, I didn't cut the guy up and I'm not dead....but you never know. I think tomorrow I will try turning left all the way to wherever I'm going.

Thanks
Ford Fiesta Mk 4 - Stalling - elie
Hi Guys
My r-reg fiesta with endura e- engine developed a similar problem, it started to stall when approacing junctions (when the clutch is depresed), took it to Ford garage and they replaced HEGO sensor, worked fine for two months but the problem came back so had to take it back, they were unable to find any fault so they recalibrated the engine and updated the software. Brought it back on fiday unfortunately nothing improved the probem is still there so I have to take it back again. It has costed me £275.00 already and funny thing is it all started after I got it MOT'ed. Any suggestions?
Thanks

Hi elie. I never updated this thread because I only found the problem a few months ago and forgot all about it.

Mine later caught fire! What it turned out to be was the catalytic converter had broken up inside and got blocked. This accounted for the low power, stalling and the eventual fire. May be worth checking out.

Welcome to the BackRoom by the way.
