Hi folks. I wondered if any members had any advice on hiring a small car in Nothern Italy?

Looking at the usual big names, they seem a lot dearer than the local companies but as I have never been to Italy before, I am wary of picking a company that have a bad reputation.

Does anyone have experience of hiring here and which companies are reliable and price competitive?

Thanks in advance for any response. :)

I’ve only used the big name companies out of Florence or Pisa. Usually Avis . Prices have got very expensive recently and it’s important to have full cover insurance. They’ll try and charge you for everything they feel has been damaged. Always do a walk around video , especially the tyres and wheels, not forgetting the boot kit , spare , jack etc if fitted .

If your trip is way in the relatively distant future, make a fully refundable booking and check the prices regularly. Most likely they will fall nearer the date so rebook then and cancel the first booking.

That's a great tip. Thanks :-)

Last time I hired a car overseas I purchased top up insurance in the UK to ensure there was no excess liability exposure, very cheap although there might be a need to cover the cost and be reimbursed.

Thanks. Yes, exactly what I intended doing.

Some of the big companies conditions put an excess of €1000 for accident or € 2000 for theft.

I have used the Which recommended brokers called Zest.

They offer full insurance cover at a small extra.

I found them brilliant when i was faced by a fuel charge in Cyprus.

I handed the problem to them in the UK and it was sorted in minutes. The car hire people refunded the charge immediately.

Zest have a 24 hour helpline and they are always there to deal with all the problems that come with car hire.

Highly recommended !

Also used Zest quite a bit.

Always had good service and they offer zero excess, additional driver for no extra cost.

i can say I have never hired a car from abroad, might I suggest you look at fly drive holidays with the better known companies in the uk, and book it from this end.
