Vauxhall Combo 2010 ?,???cc engine size? - RJY

Hi, used to post here donkey's years ago, probably with a different name, can't remember any details. Any familiar faces still around from 15 years ago?

Anyway. Just bought 2010 Combo van.


It was advertised as "VAUXHALL COMBO (2010) Panel Van 1.3 CDTi 1700 16v Panel Van 3dr", the insurer "Oh it's a 1248cc", but HMG's "Get vehicle information from DVLA" says it's a 1,686cc job, so does the new keeper supplement (COMBO 1700 CDTI).

I assume it is indeed 1,686 (1700 CDTI), but would like to check. Is the capacity on the engine somewhere, or elsewhere? Can I get the engine size from the VIN? Is there a proper engine designator so I can check the engine (maybe Isuzu, as in old Astras)?

Got to insure it on Sunday, and do not want terrible complications!

The 1.3 multi jet diesel is a Fiat engine . The 1.7 is an Isuzu design Vauxhall engine . The engine code is stamped on the engine block near the gearbox, but you’ll struggle to see it . Vauxhall dealer will be able to check the Vin details.

The registration document would surely be the best place to find which engine it is.

But bear in mind if the advert says Combo 1700, this will probably refer to the GVW (gross vehicle weight) in kg's rather than the engine size. They came with two GVW's, 1700 or the bigger payload 2000 version and you could get either with the 1248cc Fiat diesel or the 1686cc Isuzu diesel (which could be turbo or n/a)

Also possible a van of this age might have had a change of engine?

I believe the 1.3 CDTi originates from Fiat while the 1.7 CDTi came from Isuzu - so there should be a clear physical difference - but not my area of knowledge/.

Well, having bought the thing in the ice and snow, at trade terms, it looks from driving it a few miles as though there are various potentially nasty problems, although it's currently mobile. Off to "Technical" to wail and gnash my teeth and ask questions.

Well I guess at the end of the day it is a 12 year old van.

12 years of abuse and/or neglect can turn an inherently reliable vehicle into a money pit. Hope that isn't the case for you though!
