Proton Persona 1.5 GLSi - Kuang
Anyone have any experience or comments about this particular Persona? A colleague is selling a superbly maintained 97/P model with low mileage, and I'm currently tempted as the Favorit is gradually becoming a pain in the posterior.. The asking price will be somewhere in the region of £1200, but it does need a new windscreen (about £95 apparently) as the old one has two pellet holes in the drivers field of view, as a result of being parked in a less than pleasant part of Nottingham.

I'm aware of the Mitsubishi Lancer heritage of the car, and of the slightly rough edges in terms of the occasional rattle and squeak, but everything else seems quite favourable. The seller says that the spec is pretty good, and that even though it doesn't have face melting performance it's still nippy and handles very well. If I didn't know and trust him, I'd be worried about the hard sell ;) I'm not actually looking for a new car, so please don't worry about trying to find alternative suggestions - it's just idle curiosity at this point.

Any comments would be appreciated! :)

I bought one new in 1997 for my wife to use for her business, she was doing 20,000 a year with it,for 3 years,we maintained it ourselves and nothing but nothing went wrong with it,super little car, cold a/c,amongst a range of goodies,if you buy them at the right money they really are quite good.

Ive got an old Proton MPi saloon and its been excellent. its 10 years old and has just passed its 7th MOT without an faults being notified, its done nearly 80,000 miles and the engine is smooth when warmed up The only routine replacements it has needed have been 2 rear shock absorbers as one began to leak at 73000 miles and its just had a refurbished radiator fitted at 79000 miles as the old one was rusting.

I don't think this is cheap enough to be honest. Okay they're tough and easy to work on for a six year old car, but £1200 is near enough Mondeo money at that age - and while the Mondeo may be more complex, the parts are likely to be cheaper and more readily available.

Try to keep it in three figures if you want this one.

Yup, I was thinking that it might be slightly over the odds but it's good to hear it from someone else - thanks :)

The real selling point of this one is that the only previous owner was registered disabled and apparently had to have the thing regularly serviced and repaired fully the moment anything went wrong, as a condition of something or another. Consequently it's been pampered, and has only covered something in the region of 40k since new (and quite gently at that).

Might have to have a think about this one. I've just come back from a trip in the Favorit, and it's making me more uneasy every day - for a ten year old car with 36k on the clock to have had new shocks all round, new balljoints, new CVs and *still* handle as if it's trying to disco dance around pebbles is pushing the joke a bit too far..

Cheers for that!

The 'smooth when warmed up' thing is quite interesting - my colleague did say that on cold mornings it can feel as if it's starving slightly for the first mile or so and has a reduced throttle response. Was those the same symptoms you had?

Mine is an automatic and is snatchy when cold, but once warmed up its fine. you can barely hear the engine when warmed up but when its cold it is slightly tappety.

Ahh gotcha, thanks for responding :)

Oh, and I did mean to say 'were those' rather than 'was those' above - I'd changed the sentence, but failed to proofread it.

*grammatical own goal disallowed* ;)
