Ford Fiesta - Ford Fiesta Ecoboost - 1.0 (2014) Timing belt - Alex_93

Hi everyone,

I've seen another post about about this but it's a year or so old, so i though it would be worth checking for more recent info. I've taken my car to the garage due to acceleration issues mainly at higher gears, the car struggles to maintain pace on the motorway i'm in the slow lane doing 60 mph especially when there's a slight incline. There is also a light engine rattle.

The garage said it's looking like the timing belt needs replacing but they don't do the job because it's a huge faff and requires specialist tools etc. From what i can gather ford's original design was that the timing belt would last the life of the car, but they then changed it to need replacing at 150,000 miles or 10 years old. I guess they didn't put much thought into servicing / replacement process.

I've been verbally quoted £1000 + by ford for the job.

Just wondering if anyone has bit the bullet and got this job done / and if it was worth it? I've personally never had any issues with this car before so i'm tempted to get it sorted. I've looked online and prices for my exact car range from like £3,500 to £6000, so by no means an economical right off. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi, although the timing belt may well need changing, I’d very much doubt it’s the cause of the noise and lack of power. Not sure if you’ve read everything online about the ford eco boost engine, but it has a terrible reputation ( especially on early models),so the noise and lack of power could be engine damage.

I think someone on here a few months ago said that Ford were offering exchange engines at a reasonable price because of the number of customer engine failures.

Hi thanks for the response, sounds like I should get a second opinion of the issue it's self before doing anything further! I'll look into the the exchanges as well, thanks!

Don’t like the sound of this engine rattle. This engine uses a twin wet belt system where the cambelt and the belt that drives the oil pump run in engine oil. What often happens is the belt delaminates and the fibres from the belt block up the oil feed supply system. Result is no oil pressure and goodbye engine. Needs investigation.

While possible, I doubt the cause of the power loss and engine noise is timing belt related. These engines have a terrible reputation for failures (they’re known as Ecoboom by the trade) and my first instinct would be to get shot of it as quickly as possible.

Useful....not..how on earth can you say that? Sounds like a classic case of the belts degrading and blocking the oil strainer.

Might be, but I highly doubt it. Only way to find out is to spend a load of money on a car with a wretched reputation for engine problems. My advice stands, get shot of it while it’s running and there are no warning lights. A dealer will pay reasonable money for it if it’s in retailable condition.

It doesn't sound like a belt problem to me either. Even if the oil circulation was somewhat compromised it wouldn't affect the power available, unless it had been running 'dry' for a bit resulting in broken piston rings or somesuch. I'd find an experienced indy and get a second opinion.

Needs proper diagnosis I think. I would have thought low oil pressure would bring up some warning lights.

These are prone to blowing their turbos (they are very hard worked) and I wonder if the turbo is on its way out and unable to provide enough boost under load.

For all that these don't have a great reputation there are loads about with some seriously high miles on them so the idea they all explode doesn't seem to be backed up by reality.

They don’t all go bang, but the failure rate is well above acceptable. It’s a soft engine and disliked by those in the trade.

As I understand it the main problem was with the degas pipes failing causing the engine to lose its coolant quickly and overheating the engine thus damaging it, surely this has been sorted by now…?

The degas pipe problem was sorted ages ago, but I got the impression there was also a more serious underlying problem with the cylinder head casting, but I never found out anything more.

I’ve heard of all too many failures on these, mostly pre 2015 but some later. It’s not uncommon to come across examples from as late as 2017 with new engines fitted. It’s a fundamentally flawed design, one of those soft engines that I would never recommend. Yes, some people will get lucky and have no bother, in fact most owners will be fine but the risk of a catastrophic failure is far far too high. Best avoided.

That's correct and that is where they got their poor reputation from.

They are prone to lunching turbos and are an engine which does not take neglect well. They're actually really great from the driving point of view but not as good on economy as they claim. I don't think I'd recommend one to anyone but equally if you have one it probably isn't the end of the world.

Till it goes pop.

But as an aside the VAG 3 cyls seem to be ok.

The 1.0 tce Renault engine so far has been a cracking little engine to soon though to know about long term reliability

I have an almost three year old puma with the ecoboost, it’s my third ford with this engine with no problems at all, ( checks out of window expecting to see mushroom cloud over garage), but because of the views expressed on here and other sites, I’m not sure I’ll keep it long after the warranty has expired, it’s a great car though, easily gets 50+mpg,
