Hi, my husband died and left me with this BMW which is not the type of car I drive.
I want to sell it but am unsure where would be best to advertise. It has a year’s MOT but the paintwork does need some work. Mileage is 52,500. Hope someone can help as I am out of my comfort zone selling this. Thank you.

There was some useful advice given when you raised this back in June. One of the specialist car auctions might be a good solution.

Mileage has dropped 100,000 miles since June?

If it has just over 50,000 miles up and not the 165,000 miles you previously stated, then it’s a completely different vehicle and vastly more attractive to potential buyers. Which is it? A solid, low mileage 840 that’s mechanically sound but in need of a bit of paint or is it a big mileage car that needs a full repaint and is too worn and leggy to ever be valuable.

Whereabouts is this car?

The car is in Havant, Hampshire at the moment. My brother in law has been valeting it.

So sorry the mileage is 165,000, I got confused with another vehicle. Would auction still be best for this vehicle? It passed MOT easily and I’ve had it valeted.

Thanks for all replies.

I think I'd be asking on a BMW forum before doing anything else. Another possibility I'd consider is looking for your nearest independent BMW specialist, if you have one not too far away, ask them.

But it passing an MOT easily (any advisories?) is a good sign.

There were a couple of advisories, a bit of play on the steering, a couple of worn bushes.

Remember, an mot is a minimum standard safety check . It’s not a general condition of the car . A bit of play in the steering and some worn bushes could be a very expensive repair on one of these.

Despite popular opinion on here, I really don’t think there’s a lot of value in this. If it was a low mileage, full history car in good condition this would be a completely different matter. But it’s just too costly to put a tired 8 series right and with big miles its value is limited. Try the relevant forums and Facebook pages but don’t expect people to be beating your door down. I’d advertise it on Autotrader with a well written advert with plenty of pictures and see what happens. As for value, I’m just not too sure. A good one, with 70/80k up and in near perfect condition privately would maybe sell for £15/£16k but one with 165,000 miles up and in need of a full paint is a £3/£4k punt to me. It’ll cost thousands to put right and no one will pay top money for a high mileage example. I’d try it at £3,995 and see where you go. Lower the price if no takers come forward.

I agree. I think this has an early M62 engine with a single chain drive cam design. The plastic guides were prone to disintegrating after a relatively short mileage causing catastrophic damage, adding further credence to the off quoted joke about what BMW stands for. (Big Money Worries - for the OP's benefit). I wouldn't touch this car with the proverbial b-pole unless the price reflected the cost and hassle/hobby of an engine re-build.

Thanks for the advice everyone.
