Citroen Picasso C4 2015 1.6HDi - Type of air-con fluid in my '15 C4 Picasso? - Scoodle

Hi

My air con has stopped working. When I turn it on, I hear a light 'sizzling' sound from behind the dash, and no cool air. It has never had a gas top-up, so I'm hoping that's all that's needed on my 7-year old car.

If it's R134a - as in my older C3 - then I can DIY the top-up (and still have a can of the stuff!). But can this also be done if it's the newer gas - R1234yf?

And how can I tell which I have?

Thanks.

There's usually a sticker under the bonnet

The access ports are different from 134a to 1234yf . These quick fix cans are not an efficient way of recharging the system . Get it done by a specialist that will carry out the correct procedure.

Get it done properly. It'll end up costing you more if you don't. Every summer people post about quick cheap A/C fixes. Well there isn't one. Not a good one that's going to last anyway. Air conditioning systems need the correct amount of refrigerant. You won't get it right by guessing. The system will not work properly with too much or too little. It's also very important that you properly vacuum the system for 30 minutes at least to get out any moisture. Failure to do so will mean you won't have a properly and efficiently working system. So forget about a quick top up can and have the system looked at by a qualified service technician with the right equipment to do it.

Thanks all.

I'll check for that sticker.

I agree that having it done properly is the right approach - they remove all the old stuff, I believe, and then refill with new.

It would be useful to know IF it is a lack of gas first, so if the cannister I already have is the right one, and it gets the air-con functioning, then I'll know it's good for a proper recharge. If it leaks back out, I'll know I'm in trouble... :-(

Cheers.

I believe the 'new' systems filled with 1234yf will work perfectly well with the old R134A, however you'll neeed to find someone who will agree to perform this ILLEGAL operation after they've evacuated your system.

That's not all though. As I said earlier, it's also about extracting out any moisture from the system, which will be present. After refrigerant evacuation the system should be vacuum tested and held under vacuum for about 30 minutes at least. You cannot do this with a quick top up, and the air conditioning will not work well with any moisture in the system.

I've had similar sound on two Mercs and despite having a proper vacuum, dry, leak check and refill on one of them within a few weeks the problem returned.

Never found out the true issue as both were sold before I investigated further, so be prepared for a bigger issue.
