Old Jag... to buy or not to buy..... - concrete

A friend has stopped driving. He has a 2004 S type Jaguar 3.0 manual.

54K miles and full service history. Independent servicing post warranty. Very good condition and looks good. Has not been driven for 6 months so he has now decided to sell it. Wants about £1.5K

Very tempted as I now do about 4K miles per year personal mileage but would drive most days, so would be used regularly. Just don't want to buy a money pit. Does anyone know of any problems with this model and year of which I should be aware?

Any useful comments welcome.

Cheers Concrete

I presume you've read the review? For that price, I reckon it's worth a punt. If you don't want it....................................................................

Classic British barge made up of mostly american Ford mechanical components . The 3.0 v6 manual is probably the most reliable of the models. But watch out for various electrical gremlins. Electric handbrake (if fitted) , climate control (heating and aircon) are the usual suspects. Parts are generally plentiful second hand. For £1500 ,i think its worth a punt.

As above. Possibly the hardiest Jag built, largely a Ford underneath and the V6 3.0 (put two together and you’d have Aston Martins legendary 6.0 V12 btw) is very robust if looked after. No air suspension unlike the XJ of the same vintage which is a good thing and less rot prone than the X-Type. At £1500 and assuming it’s solid underneath and there’s no warning lights on I’d have it.

Hm. I once considered a used DB9 as a 'forever' fun car. Legendary? Would that be the short dipstick or long dipstick version? Or the ones with leaking timing chain covers? 'Looking after them' provides good living for some specialist AM mechanics!

Unsurprisingly, our Teutonic cousins came up with a more reliable and sophisticated power unit by putting two VR6 engines together in such a way that the power could actually be used - by transmitting it to all four wheels.

I’ve been putting 20,000 miles a year on one for the past 3 years, albeit a diesel.
As above, check the a/c works (delivers hot and cold air), and get it on a ramp to look at sills for corrosion. They’re almost impossible to see, and rot behind plastic covers.
As usual with a Jaguar, the suspension is a multi-link affair, with lots of bushes to split/perish. Maybe get it MOT’d before committing.

It's safely before the March 2006 deadline......like my 2005 A8. I have just renewed it - 340 pounds. Main thing to check would be underbody and sill corrosion. Steel Jags don't last very long.

"20 years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the things you did."

As others have said, do the due diligence (MOT history check should indicate if there are signs of corrosion, worn bushes etc) and then mentally allocate another £1,500 for items like a gearbox fluid change if it's never been done, and other unexpected bills.

Friend bought one 5 years ago.

Went to LeMans with it twice - no issues.

Auto box was nice and smooth.(watch for clunks).

.....probably the robust ZF S6 53 mainly found in countless BMWs. No worries.

Personally. yes I'd buy it (subject to normal checks).

What a lovely and lot of car for the money. Allow a reasonable budget for upkeep. Look around at the dross that's on the market nowadays for the same price.

I'll join the queue if you don't want it.

3.0 V6 manual?, rare beast indeed!. As a manual I wouldn't normally be too keen, but at that price?, it would be rude not to!.

Watched a Fifth Gear video clip not too long ago where the S Type was one of the 'cheaper alternatives' looked at to a car on test. It was deemed a pretty reliable car overall (certainly at the time, the clip was a few years old!), but mention was made of it being a heavy car so suspension and brakes lead a hard life.

thirsty and not the easiest beast to park if popping into town. It will get older and just because its cheap etc

Concrete says 4k miles per annum, so I can't see the Jag's thirsting a deal breaker. I can't see it being that bad on a cruise anyway, especially with the manual box.

And while the S Type is not a small car, it isn't that big compared to many modern cars (including its own successor and rivals). Plus, being an old and very cheap car, there won't be the same worries about getting a 'parking kiss'!.

Top Gear criticised these back in the day for being too retro. To my eyes they are a faithful modernisation of the iconic Mk1 and Mk2 Jags of gangster fame.

Buy it, ownership history doesnt get much better than what you are looking at. Plus its manual, most probably getrag.

Went to the official launch of the S type held near Maidenhead where we drove the cars round the country lanes.

Made the cardinal sin of referring them as S Class after which my life wasn’t worth living with the Jaguar boys.

Mostly remember the event for the cutbacks in hospitality restricted to tea and biscuits . Not good enough !
