You don't give the car? Is it discs and pads? Are you sure you need new discs. Equally unusual to require front and back pads at the same time. Whatever always best to try another garage or two if spending big money. Is it MOT fail?

Please could members add the age and mileage of their car when seeking advice from forum members about it. This basic information is so often missing, and has to be asked for by those interested enough to try and help.

It is easy enough now to price up the parts from ECP or similar.

Once you know that is the labour rate reasonable? For a full brake job (disks and pads all round) could be couple of hours.

Front and back discs and pads. VW Golf MK7 GT TDI.

Passed MOT in December.

Brakes and pads came up as an advisory on service.

They estimate that it's 3-4 hours labour for which they charge just over £200.

This is 1-2 hrs work by any competent mechanic. 3-4 hours is well over the top.

The garage who are telling you it needs new pads and discs are clearly dishonest. If the discs/pads were worn to a significant extent the garage that did the MOT in December would have noted them on the test as an advisory.

I would suggest you visit the garage who carried out the MOT and ask them if the pads/discs do need attention and tell them why you ask. They did nothing wrong passing the car provided they were up to stopping the car but I would be very surprised if any MOT garage did not make a note regarding pads close to the sensible wear limit.

If they suggest a change ask them for a price.

I suspect the 'service' and MoT were probably done at the same time by the same garage. We still do not know the mileage. The OP might be helped by knowing that a reasonably careful driver of a car like this should expect the front discs to last around 80,000 miles, the front pads around 40,000 miles and the rear ones even further, before they would fail the MoT. However, a boy racer with a heavy right foot might halve these values!

Service done seperately at a VW indie.
MOT done at a local garage as they were cheaper and had availability when I was off work.
I've done 41,000 miles.
Apparently there is some corrosion on the pads.

Just checked the service docs again and the brake pads have >7mm. It was recommended that discs and pads are changed due to corrosion.

The pads won't rust, it's the disks but without seeing them it's impossible to comment on their condition.

The garage where you had it serviced are saying this is advisory so on the assumption it's still ok to drive I would shop around to get several prices.

This local garage that did the service wouldn't have been a 'fit quick' type of place would it?

7 mm of pad is more than adequate. The car passed the MOT, so the braking efficiency meets requirements.

Why do you want to spend hundreds of pounds on discs and pads, do the brakes feel inadequate to you? Discs become corroded the first day the car is ever used in the wet.

7mm is quite a lot still. I've got something like 2.5mm on mine as I was advised that they were wearing thin at my last MOT (August 2021). I don't do many miles, and they've been fine up until now.

I did price new pads AND disks all around on my 2002 Honda Accord and including most of the tools needed to do the job (torque wrench, axle stands etc etc) I was looking at less than £200 (to do it myself).

I'm sure a Honda dealer would be looking at well over £800......
