Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV - Windscreen misted up on the inside in the mornings - Kevin Carty

I have an issue in that most mornings the front windscreen is heavily misted up and needs wiping multiple times to get the water off and clearly on a frosty day you can spend 10mins defrosting the windscreen

I'm assuming this is not normal and maybe I have an issue with the heating or could it be the AC gas.

your help would be appreciated

Others may wish to differ, but I'm not sure you have a problem.

At this time of year carpets/foot mats may not dry out fully and this can cause condensation. Also, A/C does not function below about 5C, so you don't get the demisting this would normally give unless/until the temperature rises.

It's something I experience often in winter.

I doubt whether a leak of the A/C gas is involved - if that's what you're referring to.

Try parking the other way round - it's certainly something I experience on both my cars and neither leaks in any way.

200 yards from home let the side windows down.

Clears the air in the car.

I leave my car with the recirculate button pressed in (I run car with AC on all year)

No problems of any dampness in the car / misted windows etc etc

Even allowing for the time of year and water carried into the car on your feet and coat with excess condensation on the internal glass then I would strongly suspect a leak somewhere. Take out the mats and feel the carpet. Also inspect the boot well under the carpet. It mat also be worth checking the internet/utube if anyone else has reported a problem

You'll always be taking moisture into the car, wet shoes, clothes, breath. If you never use fresh air option, then it can only leave by an open window. I prefer to shut the windows and have the heat on.

Yep, exactly the same with mine. I've got a couple of those little moisture traps which pull out loads of water.

Clearly there is damp somewhere in the car. As the screen is raked (partially horizontal) it cools further than the other glass, so any moisture condenses there first.

Assuming the car has no leaks, get a small dehumidifier from E-bay and use it repeatedly until the problem goes away. Some air-cons work below 5°C but a badly fogged screen can only be cleared quickly using a squeegee and a (paper) towel. I've been there, done that.

I'm not sure that driving with open windows will help much if the air is saturated ... :-)

I have the same problem with my A4 so I’ve tried windscreen cleaner on the inside as there seems to be a greasy film which I can’t shift.

Even resorted to leaving a fan heater in there to see if that will help.

Quite honestly combined with the low sun at this time of year it’s a major problem for me in the narrow village roads.

Try checking the cabin air filter, if it has one.

Will do. Many thanks Metropolis

I had a similar problem with an Astra - serious misting on all windows in the rain which air con couldn't clear. Really scary when it happened suddenly on the motorway. Indy mechanic found that the pollen filter was saturated. Suggested that me using a high pressure hose to wash the car was somehow wetting the pollen filter. He also pointed to wet leaves collecting in the scuttle tray inder the bonnet just below the windscreen. He replaced the filter, cleared the tray and this sorted the problem.

A farmer friend had that sort of problem, using a pressure washer to clean his car. I suspected the pressure washer was forcing water past the bottom of the door seals and soaking the carpets. I advised him to only use it pointing down, but couldn't suggest how he cleaned the door sills.

I'm far from convinced that jet washes are good for a car, the water is going to get to places it wouldn't normally such as behind trim, seals, grommets etc.
