Just received renewal for AutoAid up from £59 to £74.

I like the cover they provide ie, recovery to home or destination, cover for any car you are driving, spouse also covered.

Is this still good value or is it time to shop around ?

Use one of the "motoring breakdown" comparison sites to see what suits you.

All depends on age and type of car.

I was always happy with Start Rescue, but they price to age of vehicle now.

Start Rescue cover for two cars: £61.60 including nationwide recovery.

When I go to their site to get the same cover as Autoaid (myself and wife with a car each and including national recovery) it seems I need personal cover with two people covered and costs £104.55.

That is true for "personal cover" but for two vehicles (and no others) it is £61.60 according to age.

A few weeks ago I paid £59.99 to renew my AutoAid cover...that's full personal cover for me and wifey on any eligible vehicle.

Which is the same as I paid on Monday to renew.

If you have just one car in family, vehicle based recovery is much cheaper than person based cover.

Well i checked the AutoAid website and new personal cover still costs £59 !

Looks like they are trying it on with people renewing !

Might try phoning them for explanation or just cancel and buy new.

Just had a fairly long and very helpful conversation with the advisor at Autoaid (in Romford) in order to clarify a few points. The advisor was well informed and patient and was happy to confirm all my queries and areas of uncertainty.

£74.99 is the cost of personal cover when the car gets to it's 16th year.

Up to and including 15 years old it's £59.99.

Cover includes 'National Recovery' and 'At Home.' (and in my case covers me and my wife in our respective cars which are both 11 years old) ... and renewal is £59.99.

I have got the impression that there was a tiny amount of room for confusion in some of their paperwork insofar as they did change from Equity Red Star over to Right Choice a year or two ago and not all of the details are100% accurate at the moment, but she was happy to clarify all my questions. All the time there's someone at the end of a phone who can advise on points of uncertainty I'm happy to live with any small discrepancies that might exist, especially when they're as co-operative as this lady was.

She did confirm that misfuel incidents and retrieval from mud and snow are covered too. Flooding is also covered but with certain, understandable, exceptions.

I'm going to download their app as it apparently allows you to report a breakdown via the app (if that's what you want to do) plus track the progress of the breakdown driver on his way to you plus it identifies your geographical position via the GPS on your phone.... plus all sorts of other stuff which may or may not be useful.

I chose Start when I left Nationwide Flex because they have the very best reviews in Which.

The price is even better if you download the app. But I have two 03 reg cars. Did someone say that Start are charging extra for older cars. Mine includes a Toyota which should be a very safe bet.

OP here, thanks to all who replied.

The informative post from "KB" explains it all, our main car is now 17 years old so the higher premium applies. Shame it is not mentioned in the renewal documents though !!

Will be staying with AutoAid as still only £6 a month for both of us with two cars and covering any other car we use or travel in.

^^^^^ Thank you, Topdude.

On the very few occasions I've called upon their services since 1983 I've had no complaints.

And 38 years with one company is quite a long time.

Had my two people personal UK cover renewed last month for around £40 with Eversure via the CBC web site. I think they raised their prices to £48 soon after.

I can't comment on the Eversure service as we never needed a call out for the various Toyota products we drive.

Appalling service nowadays. Used to be excellent but not anymore. Broke down at 4pm yesterday. Rang three times. Advised to call the police as no one was available for recovery. Basically told to tough luck as local contractors were all busy. Finally got a hold of a "supervisor" who advised to call back the next morning. Car finally towed away after waiting 19 hours. No priority assistance for me even though I was a lone female with 7 year old boys in below freezing temperatures. Avoid.

Just to confirm - Melanie is talking about Auto Aid??

Certainly they have "evolved" over the years I've been with them and the advisor I spoke to when I called inferred there were changes planned ... but I wasn't hoping to hear the experience detailed above.

Start Rescue is dearer for my self and the Mrs. for two cars ... always has been and still is.

Howevewr, obviously price isn't everything - but you breakdown so rarely it's difficult to judge. If you don't use them in anger you're not going to know.

I just checked and would confirm Personal Cover (i.e. you driving any car) which includes your spouse is £61.49 for cars 0 to 15 yrs old and £76.49 for cars 16 plus years old.

That's not bad for two cars and husband and wife driving either. Whether or not the service that's currently provided is up to scratch I can't say, I can only say it used to be good, but things change.

I'll continue to renew myself.

I started this discussion back in 2021 and stayed with Autoaid accepting the fact that the premium for my old car was now £76.

Curiously i now have a different car of the same age and this years renewal is £61 ??

My Autoaid renewal just arrived.

For the Mrs. and myself for two cars the figure is £63.64 this year Last year it was £61.49.

The only thing I noticed was that as both my cars are now over 10 yrs old there's a charge of £25 per callout payable by me to the contractor. None of the other quotes were as low but I guess if you did have two or more callouts the others might look more competitive.

I'll gamble on not calling them out and renew again. Almost 40 years with them ... surely a record!

A little disappointing that change, up till this year so long as you were a previous customer they would honour covering your older cars for the standard rate (confirmed by email), like you i have renewed again under the knowledge that even with one breakdown the package is still the cheapest option, but the change has annoyed me and i'll look elsewhere next year.

No matter how good the rest are I simply couldn’t overlook the benefits of the Nationwide Flex Account which may be only available as the company is still a mutual.

£13 a month covers all the family living at the account holders address

for World wide Travel insurance

Car breakdown with the AA

Mobile phone insurance

Commission free currency abroad.

5% cash back on supermarket shopping.

Long live the mutual s?

Any - AutoAid breakdown price increase - KB.

The Nationwide deal looks great, more so if your family circumstances can take advantage of the benefits. For just one or two people who dont travel abroad or who only have modest mobile phones and who only drive one car then somewhat less so. But certainly a good deal for many, I'm sure.

Going back to Autoaid for a moment, I wasn't able to come close to their pricing by going elsewhere so have stayed but would say I wasn't impressed by their customer service assistant who answered the phone (after about ten minutes) .... sounded very young and very Essex and clearly hadn't been taught to speak to customers with any hint of respect or politeness (it is their customers who are keeping them employed there and they/we aren't forced to subscribe to their service) ... but, on the other hand, perhaps they work under difficult circumstances and perhaps I just caught this one on a bad day. As it happens I thought exactly the same last year when I rang to renew and wasn't impressed with the reception I was granted. It's been a long time since I had cause to contact them after a breakdown and would hope the staff dealing with me would be a little more caring in their manner.

Never been to Romford have you KB?

:)

Any - AutoAid breakdown price increase - KB.

My Mrs worked in Eastern Road for a good many years.

I lived just a few miles from Romford for most of my life.

I spent my first 39 years in and around Romford. Left 24 years ago.

It's a good place to have come from.
