RAV4 XT-R - Mot pass but with Monitor and repair - spannerman

Hello, I just bought this RAV4 , 2007 year 102,000 miles, 1 years mot. It wasn't until I got all the paperwork that I noticed the following on the MOT certificate.

Pass

Monitor and repair if necessary (advisories)

Shock absorbers has light misting of oil Offside Rear {5.3.2 (b)}

Brake pipe corroded, covered in grease or other material (rear brake pipes covered in grease) {1.1.11 (c)}

(under trays fitted obscuring some underside components )

I am rather worried about the corroded brake pipes bit. I checke the mot codes and it comes up as 'major'. Should this have passed ?

Many Thanks for any advice , help etc, gratefully received.

Have you visually checked them to make sure its not just grease rather than corroded pipes?

I've always found it odd that they're both lumped together as advisories.

I've found it odd that anything applied to the brake pipes to prevent corrosion comes up as an advisory - it's also stupid that fitted undertrays are advisories as they're factory-fitted to reduce CO2 by reducing fuel consumption.

No, which is a bit silly of me. I think it had the same on previous MOT's ?

Do You think I should inspect under the cover plates as well ?

many Thanks for Your reply. I don't have many contacts to discuss things these days !

It can do no harm to carry out your own inspection. Maybe the best solution is to wait till the next MoT, then either ask the tester to let you join him under the car, or to remove the sump guard before doing the test.

Probably the most you will discover is an oil leak. The comment about greasy brake lines is just to point out that it may be a recent cover-up job (but probably isn't).

If you want to do a cover-up job on brake pipes (that probably isn't) apply vegetable oil,(linseed best but sunflower OK) then rub them with a bit of crumpled aluminium foil. Removes rust, fills in light pitting, lasts quite well, and looks like galvanising.

Rubbing dry first pre-removes rust and gives a better appearance but is a bit more hassle.
