why did you choose your car ? - volvoman
It's very clear to me that many people are extremely attached to their cars and I just wondered what made BackRoomers choose their cars.

What car do you drive and what made you choose it ? Was it just looks (are you sure ??) or was it something more important like, fuel economy, size, practicality, cost, performance, driving pleasure ?

Come on - what car do you drive and why did you buy it ?

I'd also like like to know why some people get so upset about others not liking their cars (Fiat thread). If someone wants to insult my car good luck to 'em - I'm certainly not going to get annoyed or try to 'convert' them. Sure I'd get annoyed if someone insulted my wife but why get all worked up about a car ?

Anyone care to enlighten me ?
why did you choose your car ? - volvoman
ps I should say that I've only ever bought cars from friends or family and both cars we now own came via that route. Good sound cars with a known history - one large enough for me to get myself and everything else in it and the other great for Mrs V. to learn in. Not much esle came into the equation really.

5, Fuel economy compared to petrol
6, Reliability and build quility

Good thread, volvoman.

I currently as company car have a August 2001 1.6 Focus Ghia. Had the choice amongst others of the Golf GTi (2.0 normally aspirated run about - not the 1.8T), Astra or 306. I test drove all the cars and the focus was by far the best to drive, especially cornering, and as a 1.6 had the added bonus of only 15% tax due to it's emissions. I would've liked the 2.0 zetec, but as i'm given a company car to use I refuse to make any additional monthly contribution out of principal.

Very very pleased with the choice, no problems of any sort,(now covered 55,000 miles) and after her initial scepticism the good lady wife wants one for her next car, that believe me is some turnabout - she's from an anti ford family.

As for the good lady, just picked up a 1999 T mondeo 1.8lx for her from auction, one company owner, FFSH, CD air con, new tyres etc which to be honest I drive more than her, as she keeps nabbing the Focus. Apart from a boot leak through the rear light cluster (thanks for the advice to help me fix it backroomers), the cars running really well despite it's 120,000 on the clock. At 2k you can't complain. Bought this car because it was the right price, I wasn't sure what we'd get her when I went (as mentioned above she was after a Focus, but there were only two at the auction on the day, both above budget).

Would I be upset if others had a go at my choice of car, I doubt it too much, everyone in my office just orders the golf gti without testing any others, and when they found out what I had chosen were dismissive, that is until they drive it and see how well it handles. Everyone has their favourites, I just try and choose the car that is the best to drive (IMHO) or matches my needs best.

Hi V.

"I'd also like like to know why some people get so upset about others not liking their cars"

I think this is related to why some people 'suffer' from Road Rage. Cars are now seen as such an extension of the self that any perceived 'disrespect' provokes a furious reaction.

I'm a Polo man by the way - the cheapest car I could find with the desired mix of refinement and safety.

CF.
why did you choose your car ? - hootie
LOL, think you might regret starting me off...... :)

Well, first of all I got ALL the brochures ..................
Nah, not for my car.

Drive a nearly 6 year old Honda CRV ES auto with aircon, alloy wheels and a rear spoiler with brake lights set in it. It's silver.

I got it new from the same dealership where we'd bought four cars before, and had excellent service from both sales and servicing. Was currently driving a Civic Lsi Coupé, which I loved but my kids didn't, at the time they found it hard to see out of the back.

Mr H suggested it when it came out as a brand new model, and I went and test drove one and loved it. Since then I have done varied driving on unmade tracks, skinny, winding country lanes, and long motorway distances (7 hours round trip) frequently. The motorway drive has meant carrying some huge luggage (trunk size) and the CRV is the only similar vehicle that it would fit in.

It's easy peasy to drive, rides more like a car than the others I tried, and has never let me down.

Most of the prople I see driving the same vehicle seem to be quite a bit older than me, which is a bit galling, but hey, if I love my car, then what's it matter - it's me who has to drive it. Mr H is keen for me to get some kind of cabriolet, but tbh I'm very happy sticking with what I've got. The only time I let him choose a car for me and didn't test it myself, I hated it with a passion.

Looks, the lovely engine, comfortable seats, the driving feel (gearbox, steering wheel) space for doggie, and the looks. Wanted the estate more but couldnt afford it.

Why the dynamique? spoiler on the back makes it look better, the 17inch alloys with low profiles looks better, the sports steering wheel feels lovely to hold, and the sports seats are really comfortable.

Did i mention the looks?

""I think this is related to why some people 'suffer' from Road Rage. Cars are now seen as such an extension of the self that any perceived 'disrespect' provokes a furious reaction.""

This is a very good point. It also means it is almost impossible to venture any criticism of or simply improvement to someone's driving. You can say to someone using a PC "Did you know there's a better way of doing that?" or "You should't do that it can make it crash" without getting your head blown off.
Yet if I say to my wife " Don't crash it into reverse, it chips the cogs in the gearbox" I have to stand back and wait for the explosion.

Volvo 240 - tried, tested, sturdy, load-carrier, cheap. I love the looks.
Triumph 2000 - stylish, spacious, fast, fun, cheap. I love the looks.
why did you choose your car ? - Altea Ego
And why I did not choose a car

Had a Focus 1.8 tdCi Ghia estate on test in black metalic for a w/e. It was really nice to drive, and very quick for an oil burner. Loads of room for doggie. Despite the kwik clear windscreen (made eyes funny) and pain in the throttle ankle I was severely tempted to have it.
I went for a quick drive in it, showing up a few boy racers at the lights (who didnt expect an old tig in an estate with doggie slovbbering up the rear screen to drive "enthusiasticly"!!). Good fun, great Q car.

Then I got behind a really old boy (complete with hat) and his wife toodling along the road at speedlimit - 10, in the exact same car as the one I was driving.

Drove home, threw the keys in the ashtray, and never drove it again.

Very good thread volvoman.

I spent many weeks working with Volvo at the Skovde Engine plant, in Sweden. They are 1 of the suppliers to the Volvo Car Corporation.

Other suppliers include Volkswagen Audi Group. There is no internal favouritism by Volvo Cars to even one of its own sister companies. They buy the best.

I had a good look at VAG products thereafter and was most impressed by the technical excellence. I have realised that I do efficiency and don't really do passion and style, mainly from comments of other back roomers.

I bought a Passat in 1990. Kept it 8 years. Loved it to bits and changed it for a Golf TDi.
Prior to this I had a Renault diesel. The engine would have lasted forever, but I went through wheelbearings, discs, CV joints on driveshafts, electrical faults etc.
I have many friends with Italian cars. I'm kept busy helping them. I will not knock their purchases anymore. Just not for me.
I can tell you that Volvo, especially at the Skovde plant, are passionate about improvement. A way of life.
So are the Germans.
You just know they will be here in 10 or 20 years time.

In order of year purchased:

1982
Mitsubishi Colt GLX 1400 auto
Ex rental (Living in Kuwait)
Affordable, available, and with a reputation of reliablity

1984
Austin Aggro 1750 'Sport'
Ex uncle (I'm now back in UK)
Known history, affordable, and available as a stop-gap
Thankfully, a brief experience!

1984
MG Metro
New
Cost of ownership, fun to drive (hugely), tuning potential (exploited!)
The start of of a long and happy relationship that resulted in the best value for money motoring I've ever had, aided by fully depreciating the car over many years. Last spotted on the road in year 2000, still sounding gorgeous.

1992
Ford Sierra 2.0 DOHC GL
Previously father's company car
Known history, affordable, available, more suited to change in circumstances.

1994
Rover 420 GSi
First company car
The most fun to drive, well specified, non-lemming choice within my monthly lease budget. Had no desire to drive a Cavvy, Mundano, poverty spec 3-series etc.

1997
Vectra 2.5 V6 SRi Estate
Company car
Aided by a Vx deal at the time (fully loaded 2.5 for the price of the 2.0) the best choice within my leasing budget. An effortless way to travel, with plenty of grunt, refinement aplenty, a good spec, and as it turned out, absolute reliability. All factors that to me are more important than brand name or image, of which I care not a jot. On travelling with me long distance, and realizing what a pleasant way to travel it was, a number of colleagues who normally drove base Audi A4 or 3 series tackle rued their noisier, gutless, image led choices for which they were paying HM Inland Revenue the same, if not more, tax.

2000
Vectra 2.5 V6 GSi Estate
Company Car
As above, only more so. Chosen undriven on strength of previous experience, and never regretted. A vastly underrated machine that was a step away from the crowd. If only we could have afforded to insure it for Mrs (one years' driving experience) at the end of the lease.... :-(

2003
Volvo V70 2.4T SE
Own car
Intention to run as my business machine for four years or so, and then pass on to Mrs as a family hack for the rest of its days. Acres of space, beautifully built (Absolutely no snag list), terrific torque characteristics, goes like the wind, cruises quietly with aplomb, terrific Dolby Surround system, and probably does everything else except rally cross.

I chose this car because of...

1, Stupidity
2, Desperation
3, Lack of affordable decent cars at time of purchase
4, Incessant nagging of (now ex) g/f not understanding the hours and weekends of time it takes to choose a car properly
5, Performance

I've got a 530d Estate.

I wanted a rear wheel drive, 6 cyl diesel estate (one that could carry something and not one of these cute little ones). As far as I could work out there are only 3

- MB E220/320 cdi
- BMW 525/530d
- Vaux Omega

My wife ruled out the MB straight away saying that it looked like a herse and was far too much of an old man's car. I ruled out the Vaux as I have driven one for a long time before and found that the engine was too asmatic. Which leaves the BM.

Also plan to keep the car for c.150-200k miles, hence diesel and hence not the Vaux.

Now for the tricky follow up question lads/lasses and you've got to be honest!

On reflection, how many of you will admit that it you actually chose (consciously or not) your partner for the same or similar reasons e.g. looks, build quality, reliability, performance, economy, 'kit', practicality etc.

Hahahah .. I love it!!!

Well, baring my soul here, and there's me hardly knows you, BUT...

I chose my one and only partner on the basis of pure chemical attraction.

Let me tell you...

I was just turned 16 (so was he) and we haven't been apart since.

Having chosen on instinct - he has proven to be

dashed good looking, can't be beaten on appearance
good performer (keeping it clean)
hard worker
honest
reliable
needs little or no maintenace
little niggling faults in no way hinder the overall desirablility
increased in value over the years
later models of this type from the same manufacturer are absolutely gorgeous (2, now 15 and nearly 19, although are of a variant kind, and not *quite* so smooth running)

If I'd gone shopping with a wish list, I couldn't have found better - hence am hanging on to this little number - it's a classic!!!!

I could go on and on and on - suffice it to say, that just like my shopping and research for the new car. I KNOW A GOOD THING WHEN I SEE IT :-D

However, would not let him read this, no way ...
and god knows what kind of reply you'd get from him.

ps have of course, perused a few rival brochures, and made comparisons over the years (no test drives though thank you) - my friends also wish they'd got as good a deal as me! Infact most of them seem to have gone for the trade-in route :(

Mine was very very low mileage model (did I say model!!?!) and I was allowed to do an extensive test drive before making a final decision.

VW Polo 1.0L 1990 'G'
Secondhand, first car, friends had all had them and they were reliable and dependable despite the hatchback looking like a bread van. Fairly cheap to insure, mechanically not bad, blew the head gasket though which was a bit steep despite getting 50% off the warranty company.

Peugeot 106 XL 1.4 1997 'P'
Bought this new, chose it for a nippier engine, fairly good reputation, not bad interior. However, the reality was it was unreliable, its reputation was going down faster than the Titanic. Sold it after 12 months, it spend 2 of those at the dealership having warranty repairs. Never again.

Rover 620Si Auto 1994 'L'
A bit of a change in 1998, a friend of the family was selling it as it was surplus. It was nearly five years old with only 27K on it and I'd admired the elegant looks from when they first came out. Engine was fantastic, very revvy and the auto box was supersmooth, nice interior, very cheap to maintain as nothing ever went wrong. I adored that car put 30K miles on it and was looking to put another 70,000 on it. Got smashed up in a motorway accident and written off, probably saved my life.

Rover 623GSi Auto 1998 'R'
With the settlement from my old car and bit of cash, bought another one only with all the toys and the bigger engine. I knew this one handled better and it didn't disappoint, very quick off the lights and an excellent cruiser. The engine expired after a gasket fault led to it losing too much oil cracking the cylinder head. Uneconomical to repair so flogged it to the mechanic for £500.

Rover 75 Connoisseur CDTi 2002 '52'
Bought it for its excellent looks, fantastic interior, comfort and ride. Surprised by the diesel which was supremely quiet and only slightly less refined than the 2.5 V6 but does 45+ mpg. So far so good.

why did you choose your car ? - THe Growler
Far too many vehicles to to list and far too tedious for anyone with the slightest interest to wade through in my case, however, my current object d'amour, reasons in order of priority:

Ford F150 pickup crew cab SUV 2001 4.6 litre EFI V-8

1. Dealer offered promo of two NW Airlines tickets to the W.Coast. Since that is an airline not on my preferred list I said gimme a discount instead.

2. Size + power. Both = enhanced personal safety and security. Highly important in m y environment.

3. 4WD capability for volcano-bashing and dealing with the annual floods.

4. Room to fit a Harley Davidson in the back, along with six or seven mates for a night out at the local boozer.

5. Growlette liked the colour.

6. Leather seats.

7. Lots of buttons to play with (Growlette again).

8. Total of 8 cup-holders, two of which have rubber inserts which can be removed when Jumbo McDo Shakes (1.5 liter)have to be accommodated.

9. CD changer and cassette so I can play all my old Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson tapes as well as G's Mariah Carey CD's (provided she brings the mandatory ant- Dion/Carey earplugs along with her CD's).

10. Very useful Nudge Bar (bull-bar as per Ford catalog description) for mounting spotlights on and discouraging death-wish cyclists and jaywalkers from ill-advised interaction, while ensuring a memorable result should they be so ill-advised). Also handy for getting passers-by on lonely tracks to jump up and down on for a small fee to assist with traction in muddy places. Can also be used to good effect to shove/pull other vehicles out of way which are similarly stuck.

11.Arguably its greatest value for money is in irritating the Nanny Army and encouraging them to shout an extra round of cold ones so they can carry on lecturing to deaf ears but thirsty gullets.

12. Nice dark tint which I can see out of but which few can see into, thus preserving my basic human right of personal privacy along with helping out the aircon. See also 11 above.

Chose because it was there, on the forecourt, ready to take away, and my Golf was sick with a pink fluffy diced engine, and I didn\'t fancy any more expense, or waiting 12 weeks for a new Golf.

Sat down with the salesman and told him I wanted another Golf, with climate control, weather pack and a few other goodies and he pointed out that the passat that we were sitting next to had all of those features, plus leather seats.

Told him I thought it was an old man or reps car but he persuaded me to take a test drive. I liked it, friend said it looked good, so I got it, at £4000 below book value, as it had been pre-registered. Just 5 miles on the clock.

2001 Volvo C70 T5 now coming up for change, for the first time I may replace it with another (poss the 2.4T - more power low down although not as quick at the top end) if I can get one.

I liked the C70's blend of style (great designer, also worked for Jag), comfort (great seats and amazing stereo) and performance (very fast and ideal for my motorway miles).

Other things that came into the equation: -

It isn't as common as some and I have no kids or any great need for four doors.

This coupe looks nothing like the saloon or estate that it's based on - which all coupes should, but few do.

I also had 2 years enjoyable hassle free ownership of a T4 previously and a great dealer who continues to do the servicing.

Now if I can get into one of those new 300bhp S60R's........

great RWD handling;

Also, Mrsb, having been reluctantly coaxed into the dealership fell in love from the moment she sat in the car.

Phoenicks,

Re-your comparison C70 BMW 3 Coupe

Depends what you want.

The C70 is better looking (IMO) and suitably different from saloons and estates in the Volvo range.

The BMW coupe looks fine but too much like the saloon to justify losing the convenience of the extra two doors I would have thought.

The C70 is more comfortable. Partly because it has more space -it's more 5 series than 3.

The trade offs are - it drives very well but not as sportily as the BMW. It will not retain it's value like the BMW.

Get in and try it, that's the real test.

OKk, this is going to be a hard one to sell because I drive a (much-maligned) Vauxhall Vectra. The reason I bought it was because I wanted a reliable, cheap to run but fairly nice looking and not-too-slow *family* car. Happy to say the VV fulfills all of these criteria. I'm actually on my second one - the first was written off by a crazy speeding Italian in a Austin Metro (yes!). However this one is *exactly* the same as the other one.

All in all, I can highly recommend these cars. I know they (and the dealers) have a bad reputation, but if you're honest, you know that's only because Jeremy Clarkson slagged them off when they first appeared in 1995.

This one is a 1999 T-reg (facelift model) GLS spec - aircon, alloys, CD, ABS, T/C. It also came with FVSH. I like the styling (I'll admit it looks better from some angles than others). Gives great fuel economy (between 33mpg and 38mpg). The 2.0 16v ECOTEC engine produces 125bhp and it does 0-60 in about 9s (not that I'm in to that sort of thing), it's comfortable and quiet and it'll happily cruise at 90-100 all day.

Parts and servicing are extremely reasonable - mainly because there are so many Vectras about I suppose. I've never had any problems with the vehicle, mechanical or otherwise and I actually enjoy driving it!

Thought Peugeot's boring so didn't bother visiting dealership... received junk mail from Peugeot advertising a Disney day. We took our youngest daughter along whilst waiting for our eldest daughter at a nearby dance lesson. Sat in 307sw and guess what??? Fell in love with the glass roof and the cedar green interior.

So to conclude, I choose cars based on falling in love with a design!!

Kia Magentis; it had the good word from HJ and then others I found, it was cheap, it has six pots and a decent box, my wife finds it comfortable and yet it has quite a tolerable chassis.

Only, for some odd reason the manual six is now discontinued in UK.

Tomo as was!
