Can anyone confirm whether the Yaris is fitted with a stainless steel exhaust as standard? When I was first looking at one about 18 months back I was told by the salesman they were. However, mine appears to be developing a blow in the exhaust at about 3 years 3 months old. My questions are:
Was I informed correctly that it is a stainless exhaust, or not? (This was one of the reasons for choosing the Yaris, but only a minor one)
Is a blowing exhaust at 39 months / 31k miles reasonable? I'd suspect not if stainless which is why I think I've been misled by the dealer. I also suspect I'm likely to be about 3 months late as I doubt it'd be covered by an extended (manufacturers equivalent) warranty. (I didn't need to get the exhaust done at all on my old Tipo and it seemed OK to look at even after I'd had the car about 2.5 years, so I don't really know how long an exhaust should last)

I'd be surprised if they were s/s on such a car.
Exhaust can last anything from 13 months to 13 years in my experience; depends on driving environment (short runs lead to more rapid corrosion) and design (internal water traps).
Warranties usually exclude exhausts.

Yeah, that's what I thought. Of course there is no way I can prove what the salesman told me even if it would help if I could... :s
The warranty covers the exhaust except for corrosion so looks like I'm stuck there. From what I could tell from a quick look, it appears to be a pipe connecting the cat to the back box that has corroded and it seems to have corroded away from any joints. Is it likely this can be changed fairly cheaply or will it be designed to need to change as much as possible? I'll ask the dealer for a quote, but I suspect it'll be cheaper to go to a (good) local exhaust place I know.

Try the magnet test. If it sticks then it's mild steel, if not then it's stainless steel.

Magnet test is not a true test for stainless steel. Cheaper grades can be magnetic.

Thanks, Peter, this may actually point out the problem, as I'm pretty sure the boxes looked OK still, so it must be that the pipes are made from an inferior grade of material. Do pipes tend to be replaceable or repairable separate from the rest of the system? Also, is the dealer the best place to go for exhausts, or is an independent specialist likely to do just as good if not better a job for less?

Took it to the exhaust place and found two things. Firstly, I was lied to and it's not a stainless exhaust at all. However, it's not at fault - there is some surface corrosion but in the main it's OK, and it's certainly not that knocking.
Took it to the dealer and they can't find anything, so need the car for a half-day to try and work out what's wrong... Not sure if I want it back TBH - they seem to have a few more in stock reasonably priced so I might just see how much they'll give me as trade-in and offload it to someone else.

No, the yaris is not fitted with a stainless steel exhaust, and what you have just said about the sales man goes to show they will tell you anything to sell a car. The miles and age of your exhaust is about right, although the replacement one you fit will probably only last 2 years.

Tyre Kicker,
Can you please refrain from posting using solely UPPER CASE letters. Contributing to an online discussion group with the caps lock on is thought to be bad manners (it's a way of expressing bad temper because it looks as if you're shouting).
This is the 3rd post of yours I've had to edit. If I come across any more, it will be far easier for me to delete rather than edit.
