Car owners in the UK have been told to make sure they do not miss their MOT, even if they are not currently able to use their vehicle.

During the first national coronavirus lockdown in 2020, the need for the annual checks was put on hold and drivers whose certificates were due to expire before 31 July were given a six-month extension.

However, the government has declared that MOT and servicing and repair centres are an essential service and remain open for business during the third lockdown. tests are an essential service

The AA said drivers who were furloughed or working from home might be tempted to let their MOT expire, with the intention of renewing it only when lockdown restrictions were lifted.

Jack Cousens, the head of roads policy for the AA, said: “The MOT centres are still open, so people should still get them done; that way you’ll have the vehicle ready if there’s an emergency situation and you need it.”

The Association of British Insurers said some car insurance policies required a valid MOT but even when this was not the case, drivers would need to ensure their vehicles were maintained.

A spokesperson for the ABI said: “Motorists should get their MOT in the usual way. If this is not possible due to the impact of Covid-19, such as the need to self-isolate, insurers will be pragmatic and not penalise you for something that is out of your control.

“Safety is paramount and it is illegal to drive a car in a dangerous condition, so make sure to check your brakes, tyres and lights before driving.”

Last year all cars, vans and motorbikes with an MOT due to expire between 30 March and 31 July had the deadline by which they needed a new one extended by six months.

When garages were said to not be essential in the first lock down the Gov had no option but to extend MOT's. But since they are staying open why should there be an extension?

The garage I use for MOT's on the Caterham stayed open during the lockdown and continued to carry out MOT's The only reason I delayed the Caterhams MOT for about a month was the fact the car was on SORN and not legal to drive on the road.

The Skoda garage we use staked open during the whole lockdown because they maintain a large fleet of emergency services vehicles. Initially they were not carrying out work on private vehicles but late in April stated taking bookings, our Fabia was serviced mid May.

ORB has answered your question, Skidpan - a few people may have reasons preventing them taking a car for a MoT.

Never had asked a question. If garages are open drivers must have a current MOT if they use their cars. No MOT and get car taken off you when caught.

But remember you are allowed to drive a car without a current MOT if taking the car to a pre-booked MOT appointment. So if you cannot get out because you are shielding make sure your first drive will be to the MOT garage if your MOT expires.

Quite simply there are no excuses.

Entirely correct. Skidpan!

Never had asked a question.

Surely you did as signified by the ? sign at end of your first paragraph.

Various combinations of lockdown, shielding, lack of work/income etc can make getting an MoT more difficult than it would usually be. There may also be issues with capacity to perform tests as Covid safe working methods reduce throughput plus the possibility of testers having symptoms/positive test or self isolating.

Whether the government should allow some latitude based on that is another question.

I thought the maximum penalty for no MOT was a fine, not even points.

IDIOT is the perfect word to describe those who "star" on the Police programmes. Only the other week a young chap was stopped and whild being arrested he was constantly asking what he had done wrong. He did not seem to understand that having no licence, no insurance, no MOT and not tax were in anyway illegal activities.

As I said, IDIOTS.

And that includes the Magistrates who dismiss charges against such offenders.

If you think its OK then you need to have area think about your values.

Magistrates decide cases based on law and evidence. If the prosecution don't plead the case properly it will fail.

Magistrates are far less reluctant to convict than juries.

OK, lets include the CPS then.

I was thinking about your applying the word to a previous poster.

"If you think its OK then you need to have area [?] think about your values."

Why you think I what I put reveals anything about my views of those who flout the law I have no idea.

If people act like idiots they deserve to be called an idiot, end of story.

Just looked for the definition of an idiot, the first in the list is "a person who is considered to be foolish or stupid" a bit further down is "an utterly stupid or foolish person"

That fits the people on Police, Stop, Idiot perfectly.

I (for another) am sad that Skidpan has resumed littering his posts with what seems to be his preferred term of abuse. Idiot has a semi-technical meaning, usually suggesting a person with severe mental deficiency - not just someone who has done something annoying or a bit foolish.

I think its pretty fair to say many of these low lives have some form of mental deficiency probably brought on by drug abuse or inter-breeding.

Yes - so it would seem. And, as before, when pressed on it he digs his hole deeper.

I thought the maximum penalty for no MOT was a fine, not even points.

A straight no MoT, perhaps just forgotten on an otherwise well maintained car, is a fine of around £100. If the car's not roadworthy or downright dangerous then court, bigger fine and points will follow.

If accompanied by no tax/insurance then impounding is pretty much a cert.

There was no requirement for MOT stations to close during lockdown number 1.

Extending MOTs again would prevent some covid-19 deaths but it might cause a few fatal accidents caused by defective vehicles. My guess is that it would save considerably more lives than it would cost, so MOTs should be extended again.

There was no requirement for MOT stations to close during lockdown number 1.

That is why my local MOT station stayed open.

But the local Kia, Peugeot and Toyota garages (we pass them on the way to Tesco) all stayed closed with the gated barricaded until July.

As I said above our local Skoda dealer was working all through lockdown because the maintain emergency vehicles. But until late April/May they did no work on private vehicles.

During Lockdown 1 there appeared to be a lack of communication somewhere as far as MOT Tests were concerned. People who's car's MOTs expired within a given period were given a free 6 month MOT extension so as to delay them having to take their car for a new test during the Lockdown period.

However, the MOT testing stations didn't close!

I did wonder how long the 'new' skidpan, apparently more considered and restrained, would last before the 'old' skidpan returned.................

It only needed the right thread with the usual posters that cannot see wrong in anyone (except left wing politicians) objecting to referring to people by a name that describes them perfectly.

I am always considered but an idiot deserves to be revered to as such.

My comment was not in response to the use of the word 'idiot'. It was because in your considered opinion, someone who is suffering from a mental deficiency is most likely either a drug addict or inbred.

If you called any of the individuals you have described as 'idiots' to their face you might well receive a bunch of fives in return. Only a thoughtless loudmouth (Trump comes to mind, oddly) sees fit to use those words anonymously IMHO. It might be less offensive to say they had behaved idiotically - it's a less direct insult ?

I got the short straw here, car was due first MOT a few days in to August. It coincided with the lifting of shielding, so this was the first car journey I drove between March & August. Passed first time, but the brake disks showed signs of lack of use (little light rust). If I hadn't had the test I would have taken the car off road, and considered SORN. Mrs S was luckier, MOT for her car was due in May so was extended to November.

Now my driving licence needs to be replaced, luckily this may be done online, will leave to the last day as I'm back to shielding again (Government's letter says to 21 February) so I am not going anywhere for the time being*. The car is parked up across road not to be used. However, will start alternate weeks to ensure battery is not drained too much.

There is a complication on the horizon, the car needs a service by mid February, otherwise the extended warranty and breakdown cover will expire.

*except if I get the call to come for the inoculation, hopefully it will be effective for a person with lymphoma.

Best of luck to both you and your car, Smileyman.

"....anything except incest and morris dancing' is one of those things that many of us would like to have said. I've seen it attributed to Arnold Bax, although he too may have been quoting someone.

Bax: To the Wall is among the list of pieces that ought to have been written but weren't, alongside:

Faure: Into the Unknown

Delius: Myth

Haydn: To Nothing

Offenbach: Up the Wrong Tree.

Best to avoid introducing any strange and complex substances during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy when the embryo is busy forming its specialised cells in the process of becoming a foetus. Oldest antenatal advice can be found in the bible - Judges 13, verses 7 and 14.

As commented elsewhere, aftersales departments are booking a long way ahead at the moment. And the earlier you book it, the better chance of a dealer having a collection & delivery driver free to come and get it and drop it back to you.
