My car heater has turned limp and is know Luke warm, one side is cooler than the other side- though even the warm side is not super hot as it used to be. I will give the cooling system a flush to see if that helps. Car warms up fine, temp need le is at 90 on the highway and oil tea says 90 degrees as wel - so no duff thermostatl. A/C works fine as well. Saw a video on YouTube that suggest that these cars may have a duff temp sensor behind the side vents on both sides of the car - though video was for a mark 6 with climatronic. Mine is mark 7 and does not have climate control.

Thanks for any replies

Possibly a blocked heater matrix . Not uncommon on these . Check for a label on top of the expansion bottle that reads “mit silica” .

Get the car warmed to 90 and feel the heater matrix pipework under the bonnet. You will see it going through the firewall.

Both pipes should be hot to touch. If one is cold it suggests a matrix problem.

Your knowledge is simply mind blowing Elekie doc.
Have you thought of writing a book ?
Or how can we make sure you see our posts when we have a problem ?

The previously mentioned "mit Silikat" issue is common on many VAG models, especially diesel. Basically on some engines a Silica "tea bag" has been fitted into the header tank (stamped "mit Silikat" ) that in time can burst. This then turns the coolant a muddy colour and the released material partially/fully blocks the fine tubes of the heater matrix. Basically crap design. This is a common problem.

The official fix is replacing the heater matrix after flushing the whole cooling system and replacing the header tank with a version without the silica bag. This is a big job.

You MAY get away with replacing the header tank, flushing the cooling system and reverse flushing the heater matrix.

The Silica bag was fitted to try and ensure no need to replace the G13 coolant and the Silica protects aluminium components and depletes in time - without the dreaded bad the recommendation is to replace the coolant every few years.

Might make sense to flush out all the silica crud and replace with G12, or better still, G40 coolant. Can't see why they introduced G13 - silicates are known to wash off and create problems.
