Ford S-MAX - Dual Mass Flywheels - what causes them to go? - Megadethmaniac

Purchased 6 months ago.

Runs fine, very slight occasional miss around 2k rpm.

Clutch went week before Christmas and DMF and Clutch replaced.

Christmas even the car runs like a Tractor / Narrow boat chugging away with the car vibrating.

Garage returns from break and we get AA to tow it down. They diagnose failed clutch no ability to get into gear. Car has done maybe 50 miles?

Garage end up removing clutch and diagnose failed DMF. New one installed.

Collected yesterday and gone again!

Duff batch?

"Dual Mass Flywheels - what causes them to go?"

Vibration. Poor design/manufacturing standards.

Duff batch?

cheap unheard of parts would be my first thought, or damaged by ham fisted alignment or re-attachment of the gearbox, or the wrong part entirely, twice, or there's something amiss at the crank end of things.

As above may be poor parts, most decent independents will fit LUK or similar quality clutch kits, ask what they are using.

LUK I`m sure. Mech indicated he`d only fit that or Sachs and I think they are the cheaper

Some years ago a branch of the company I worked for was approached to manufacture dual mass flywheels.

The company had over 50 years experience in the field of vibration products, crankshaft dampers for everything from BMC Minis through truck diesels to marine engine dampers.

After extensive design and prototype testing, they declined to supply DMFs, as it was their conclusion that it was not possible to make these which would meet expectations of performance and durability to the same degree as their other established products

like what at the crank?

like what at the crank?

Anything really, does it have undiagnosed excess end float, is there some main bearing wear at the flywheel end, is the crank to flywheel face still fully attached to the crank, ie has the crank cracked! or is there excess engine pulsing masked by the DMF shattering the things within days, i don't know to be honest but it's obvious something is seriously amiss and if the mechanic really has fitted what he says he has then it isn't likely to be poor quality parts unless the parts are fraudulent copies and he's being ripped off.

I have broken a crank before and depending where they crack the engine can still run quite normally for a while, this is an outside possibility though.

Thought thrust bearing issues were a thing of Triumphs in the 70`s!

Other issues are they likely on an 80K motor with a good amount of service history?

Believe suppliers are Euro Car \parts
