Toyota Corolla Verso T3 D4D year 2001 - Oil change on diesel low annual mileage 2225miles - Dragon 999

My wifes car is only used for short runs, I changed the oil & filter when she got it and since had done 2225 miles in a year almost to the day. So as we want this engine to last my question is, would it be wise to change the oil & filter now (yearly) despite low miles or leave it longer. The way I look at it is the low stop start miles are far worse than say motorway miles. This isnt about cost it's about looking after and keeping a good car/engine going for another ten years.

What does the car handbook say?

It's usual for an oil change to be specified every 12 months if the normal mileage (10,000) has not been reached; otherwise it's usually changed every 10,000 miles, though some manufacturers specify considerably longer intervals.

My car's not a Toyota nor is it a diesel; my average mileage is a bit less than 10,000 but the oil is changed every year, when the car is serviced.

I know certain others here feel differently.

For all the cost involved I’d get the oil changed every year. Low mileage use is harder on it than motorway pounding and it’s a good idea to have a mechanic look over the thing at least once a year. An Mot simply checks the car for road safety, it pays no attention to the oily bits. Plus although it’s old and of little value a stamp in the service book every year adds value when you come to sell it on. A nice Corolla with a full history will sell almost instantly while one with nothing will appeal only to the bargain hunters.

I would change oil and filter every three years - about every 7000 miles. My TR7 also does few miles a year. I have changed the oil and filter six times in the past 30yrs after never more than 6,000 miles. The engine is nearly 40yrs old, has done over 70,000 miles, works very well and requires no top-up between changes. I see no reason why your engine should not last this long as well.

The annual oil change whatever the mileage is a massive multi-million pound scam imposed by the garage trade and their associates upon tens of thousands of pensioners. It might have made slight sense sixty years ago when ill fitting pistons allowed contaminating blow-by of incompletely burnt fuel and crankcase breathers were open to air allowing ingress of moisture and degrading micro-organisms, but nowadays with sealed well built engines and modern oils it is just utter nonsense - and HJ should be ashamed of perpetuating it.

I would change oil and filter every three years - about every 7000 miles.

It really depends how the low mileage is achieved - if it's average mileage but only once per week then maybe but if it's very short journeys every day then annual change would be better.

It comes down to the number of cold starts.

My wife's 2003 Yaris with the same engine does 1,000 miles/year.

Annual oil and filter changes £30 a year..

The old oil stinks of contaminants - fuel unburned I assume..

Let me see will I spend £30 a year to keep the engine in good state?

Or risk major bills in the future ?..

(the timing chain costs £500+ to replace and it wears with bad oil)

Really difficult one that.

As RT already states much depends on how this low mileage is achieved. If it’s an occasional longer run where the engine reaches full operating temperature (like a rarely used old classic British sports car) and the moisture in the oil burns off then yes you could extend the period and save maybe £50-£60 a year (or £1 a week) on an oil change.

However I think that to constantly suggest people neglect to service their cars without knowing whether they have any mechanical knowledge is reckless not only from a road safety point of view but also this flawed advice could see someone on limited means lose their car or suffer a serious and costly breakdown. While I do sometimes agree with JF (mostly his taste in cars - TR7 aside) but I think he should not be telling people to neglect their cars, and while it’s a free country where you should be able to voice your opinion I’m concerned that someone reading his advice could hurt themselves, others or their bank balance.

I’ve often seen the results of neglect on cars I’ve been offered, others I’ve valued as part exchanges and closer to home my then girlfriends car when I first met her. She had a very tidy wee Peugeot 106 1.1 which on first glance looked well maintained but not long after I took it for a run and couldn’t get the thing to break 70mph (I know I know) and it pulled like the brakes were on. A quick look at the oil told me the answer, it was like tar and hadn’t been changed in almost 3yrs. It was past saving and was disposed of for a nice Civic I picked up and then maintained correctly which never cost a penny beyond tyres and a basic annual service.

To answer the OP’s question in more depth and in a responsible fashion. If you know what you’re doing, you’re mechanically minded and don’t mind taking the time to regularly pop the bonnet and look underneath AND you only use the car for longer but occasional runs then yes by all means save yourself a few pennies and change the oil less often. Otherwise pay £120 or so a year to get a garage to service and check it at least once a year.

Get the service & MoT at the same time - some of the work is the same - I pay the full price for an MoT (which is VAT FREE!) & my Indie takes £20 off the servicing cost which is equivalent to£24 off my bill after the VAT is added!

I would change the oil and filter once a year regardless of mileage. 31 years working for Toyota btw..

As you are changing it yourself (i assume, as you did it first time), costs are minimal, so i would change it every year.

Just for you JohnF, i change mine twice a year, even with the sump holding 7.5 litres an oil change costs me about £25 including the filter...oh and i buy oil and filters in bulk :-)

Thanks all, just wanted to know what you thought. Personally I would do it yearly anyway regardless. It's a cracking car and well looked after so would be false economy not to change the oil I think. Low stop start miles, not getting a chance to warm up most of the time.......Yes I'll stick to yearly.

Thanks everyone for your input

I think that most of us have had enough of the silly spats between John F and Skidpan where they resort to personal abuse. I have hidden one post from each of them.

Dragon999 - you'll find that this is one area where people disagree, but the majority go along with your own reasoning, that it's best to play safe and change the oil regularly, although I can see the logic in making exceptions to that for cases like a classic car that's used only occasionally and then for longish trips.

Fortunately the great majority of us on the forum are adult enough to respect the views of others (provided that they don't give advice which is dangerous) even if we disagree with them.

Avant, I have just read this with dismay. I never resort to personal abuse. Please either confirm this or display the debate.
