Hi all

Im going to write a very long post later today on my Q5 when i have time as theres a lot to write. But i also wanted to ask for peoples opnion on the Volvo XC60? Is it a good car are Volvo's good cars? My partner is looking at getting a new car is current is on its last legs so hes buying outright either new or second hand. But he already has is mind set on a volvo xc60 as he as always loved volvo's design and the Xc60 always catches his eye. But its reading articals that say volvos are rubbish and are very cheaply made that concerns him. Hes test drove one and loves it its perfect for his needs.

Is the XC60 a good car? Hes asked on a volvo forum who said that the Xc60 is a good reliable car. And everyone who replied is happy with there xc60.

Thoughts?

The D4 diesel engine used across the Volvo range from 2014 - 2018 has suspect reliability. The Exhaust Gas Recycling (EGR) assembly on the engines between those years has a fundamental fault which Volvo has been unable to fix.

So I would not recommend a 2014 - 2018 XC60 D4. I had the D4 engine in V60, and it had three fixes under warranty in 3 years, before the car came to the end of its lease agreement. Great car otherwise, but I was glad it wasn't my own money I was spending on it. Some owners are now out of warranty and battling with Volvo to get a definitive fix, despite multiple attempts to solve the problem during the warranty period.

The mid 2018-on diesels have a completely different EGR assembly which is supposed to fix the problems above - but it's too early right now to say if it truly HAS fixed the issue.

I like Volvos but I would warn you not to buy a diesel version from 2014 onwards.

Thanks, hes looking at petrol models from 2017 onwards. What are petrol models like

I know people who have the X60 and they have been really reliable. I've had Several Volvos over the years and they are excellent cars, they aren't flash or gimmicky but as a workhorse hard to beat. All the diesels have been fine, the only engine issue I had was a stuck injector which took a while to get out.

Hi thought I would be cheeky and jump in here regards EGR issue, you may remember my situation and have to say all good so far with repair / modification car not using ant extra oil, engine running a little hotter as fan seems to come on more frequently but fuel economy between near 43 local and 47 on a fast motorway run constant 70 ish to Stafford from south coast, can be noisy on first start up; but very responsive speed pick up, gear box after so called software upgrade bit only slightly jerky, so far so good, but waiting on a unspecified recall from Volvo, hope it’s not cooler particle filter again, waiting on further instructions ??

Assuming this is the current shape XC60, it is a bit too new a design (April 2017 i think) to be making any valid comments about its reliability. Anyone who has one will still be well within the warranty period, and how well the dealer addresses any issues does have a bearing on how the owner views the problem.

This is the 'good/bad' section for the car in the review on this website,

www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/volvo/xc60-2017/good/

Not really much to get excited about. Though i have to say i am a little bemused by the fact that it being, 'not as sharp to drive as its rivals', is considered a minus point. Surely not everyone on the road wants their SUV to drive like a hot hatch?. Also, the boot is cited for being amongst the smallest in class, and while that may well be the case, it does have a volume of over 500 litres.

There certainly has been comments from forum members concerned about how the long term reliability of the current Volvo line up fare under their Chinese owners, what with the "any engine you like as long as it is 2.0 litres" mantra, and the high tech interior with its huge touchscreen which houses most of the controls. especially compared to older Volvo's, which, in some cases, are near enough indestructible.

I’m keeping a watching brief on all things Volvo as I’m considering (emphasis on ‘considering’) a V60 or maybe an XC40 for my next car. My choice of engine would be the T4, that is 2 litre petrol with 190 HP. All the reviews I’ve read and YouTube videos I’ve watched are favourable, so the only issue for me is reliability. I’ll keep my eyes and ears open.

I had a May 2016 V60 D4 and Volvo had just fixed the EGR problem before mine was delivered. I had no problem in the two years that I had it. It was solid but both performance and handling were stodgy, and the ride not comfortable enough to make up for this.

Your partner should get a long test drive and see how he likes the XC60. I had the XC40 on my short-list last year, when I eventually went for the Q2, and I found it too wallowy and vague in terms of handling, although two friends have XC40s and are very happy with them.

I believe the petrol Volvos are better to drive, but very thirsty. One friend with a T5 XC40 gets no more than 28 mpg on a long run, whereas my 2.0 petrol Q2 will do 40+.

Finally, I personally wouldn't go near a car where the heating and A/C have to be adjusted via a touchscreen. The XC40 is one such - not sure about the XC60. This is potentially dangerous: so much for Volvo's boasting about the safety of their cars.

Volvo xc60 - Sarah kingsley

Avant , the XC60 is all through touch screen i would not have one either due to that reason.

I did not find it as comfty either compared to my Q5. Hes doing another test drive.

I have an XC60 D4. It is just over 2 years old with about 20k miles. I have it because I tow a caravan and the 8 speed TC autobox is very good. 32mpg towing and 43mpg general driving. No problems at all. No warranty issues, just regular annual servicing. We do long journeys in ours and comfort has not been a problem. The car has lots of gizmos we don't use. Voice control over some things etc etc. People are always telling me what bells and whistles the car has and I am constantly surprised. I would never specify these things but the vehicle comes with them so that is it really. Would consider a new one but they have increased in price somewhat so maybe beyond my intended budget. Need a decent sized diesel though for comfortable towing. Looking at a Kia Sportage or Hyundai Tucson for future use. Hope you find your suitable vehicle.

Cheers Concrete

Don't the cars also have voice control for controlling heating and ventilation?

I've had a few Volvos, tough as old boots and reliable for me. A b***** minded person could keep a Volvo running for donkeys years alla Irv Gordon and his 3 million mile P60....still going.

Surely you mean P1800 (like Roger Moore had in The Saint)?.

But a much simpler car than Volvo's current range, so not really comparable.

Volvo xc60 - Dingle232

I have had a few Volvos including a D3, D4 (new) and a D5 V60. I now have a new variant XC60 D5 Inscription and it's the best car I have ever had by some way.

As others have mentioned the touchscreen isn't to everyone's liking BUT there is little that you can't do via voice command. This includes adjusting temperature, AC, fan speed, radio, media, sat nav etc. It's by far the most intuitive I have used and you can do it all with eyes on the road and hands on the wheel. I do so every day.

I have previously worked in Sweden for 7 years where virtually every other car is a Volvo. I have had a few there on long term leases and rental arrangements and again, never had an issue. Most of the Swedes I worked with owned either them or BMW's - I never heard a single person complain about them other than for a puncture.

My car is 3 years old around 12 months from now, at which point I'll consider changing it. I am highly unlikely to buy anything else. They are also legendary for their comfort - something else I'd attest to.

You use your XC60 every day? If I remember right, Dingle, you also recently bought a BMW 335d. Don't you get tempted by the straight-six to take that out instead?

Are you stalking me Avant? :-)

I actually didn't get the 335d in the end as it didn't have the room I needed. The XC60 was bought instead so, yes, I use it every day.

This thread is a little old now so I guess the OP will be sorted, but if Sarah is still looking for an XC60 she maybe interested to know that there is a very good deal on offer under the Volvo affinity scheme.
You can join the scheme a number of ways eg as an advanced driver or by joining the the Volvo owners club. With the latter you have to be a member for 6 months before you can get the discount but it could be £35 well spent. The scheme is offering 10% and another £1K off the price of a new XC60 and an additional £1500 off if you take out Volvo finance. Also metallic paint is free, worth £700 alone. Also there is discounts on accessories and servicing to be had.
As I say, you have to have been a member of the VOC for 6 months, but there are several other ways you can join, I just cannot remember all of them.

Affinity schemes & save some money?

Better Still

1) Pre-reg cars with nominal mileage & £6,000+ off

tinyurl.com/yxv7a6tz

2) Go via Broker & get a brand spanking new one from a Volvo dealer for even less

Volvo xc60 - badbusdriver

Pretty sure the OP ended up buying a nearly new Audi Q3.

Volvo xc60 - Avant

She did, but I think the Volvo may have been what her partner was looking for.

That deal is better than the one currently offered by Carfile.

e.g.

D4 at Carfile with metallic is £34767. They are offering £1000 contribution if you take finance thus £33767. Depending on which finance offer servicing is either free or £399 for 3 years.

D4 using owners club. £34843.50 after 10% discount. Take of additional £1000 and £1500 for finance offer and its down to £32343.50 including the free metallic.

Depending on the service offer it could be a £1400 saving. Well worth knowing about.

Volvo xc60 - Robert J.
I thought so skidpan. I was thinking of changing my car next year and was looking at an XC40 until a poster on one of the Volvo forums pointed out you could get an XC60 cheaper with the affinity scheme. I am sure another poster was able to get some dealer discount as well, which brought the the price below what any brokers could match.
The only downside is that you have to be a member of the VOC for 6 months, which is when I would be ordering anyway.
There are many ways of joining the scheme, advanced drivers is one that I recall, but the VOC was most convenient for me.
