CR-V 2003 2.0 petrol - Knock sensor - changed but fault still occurs - mss1tw

Hi all

After a horrendous 3 hours changing the knock sensor on my CR-V, the engine warning light still comes on. Faults logged are knock sensor and Electric Load Detector Circuit High Voltage.

The fault started intermittently with the old sensor, and then got worse. Even with the new sensor, the engine light comes on more or less instantly while driving (Fine at idle/revving in neutral)

Does anyone have any further ideas what the issue could be? Obviously it's not worth throwing loads of money at but if it's something cheap or simple I'm ears!

Thank you

The knock sensor is basically a microphone that listens for engine detonation and adjusts the ecu settings to compensate. They rarely give trouble , the fault is usually the result of another problem, not the cause. Low oil level can cause this fault. If I recall , the load detector device is in the engine bay fuse box.

Thanks, I did have my doubts elek doc - as you say it's a sensor with no moving parts. Have to admit I haven't checked the oil recently, but it was full the last time I did and rarely uses any. The engine is/was sweet as a nut.

Any thoughts on the load detector? I was surprised to see high voltage rather than low voltage.

May be an idea to get the battery and charge system tested . Also vvt actuator can have an effect on timing and flag up knock sensor fault.

"Also vvt actuator can have an effect on timing and flag up knock sensor fault."

How do you know all this, you've got Google absolutely beaten here elekky!

OK, now that makes a lot of sense as now it does hesitate noticeably most of the time at about 5000rpm (Very approx) when accelerating, at the point I imagine the cam timing is swapping over. I didn't even know it had a knock sensor until now, I thought they were for more tuned cars.

Unfortunately the MOT is in June so with that EML it looks like that will be the end of the road - hasn't even ticked over 100k miles yet but the alternator whines, the air con sounds fragile (Although does blow cold) and now this instant MOT fail

Google is my best friend. Lots of incorrect info and videos by people that have never done the job professionally. You may be ok with the mot and Mil light. It only affects petrol cars built after 2003.

That's interesting thanks - didn't know that rule. I'll stick it through and see what happens then. While I was crawling around underneath I saw a sticker on the loom that stated the build day was May 2003

Hi mss1tw,

Did you solve the knock sensor problem / pass MOT with light on / scrap the car ?

I have the same car and codes (knock sensor and Electric Load Detector Circuit High Voltage)

I replaced the Electric load detector in the engine bay fuse box and that cured the code.

Still have the knock sensor code, just debating if it is worth replacing or not as over £100 for the sensor at Honda dealer !

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks.
