2007 Kia Picanto - Need Mechanical Advice - Carolyn Kemp

Hi, hope you can help. I have recently looked at a 2007 Kia Picanto with a view to purchase. Asking price one thousand pounds. *Seller advised brake pipe has corroded currently and is covered in grease. When test driving the car the appeared to be a noise which indicated a slipping fan belt, the seller confirmed this saying he tweaks it or resets it when this happens. The mileage on the car is 49,900. Obviously I do not want to buy a car that is going to cost me a lot to repair it. Please would you advise me what these repair costs would be and what the long term implications... the steering wheel also seem to shudder slightly..... if it will help you the registration number is AV570ER - the car has had one owner and is very clean....would really appreciate your advise. Thank you.

As this is a question about a possible purchase, I've moved it to Motoring so that more people will see it.

Any £1,000 car is a gamble, but there are plenty about - so avoid ones like this with known faults. The seller is being honest, but you can see why (s)he wants to move it on.

From the MOT history, 2016,

  • Nearside Rear Inner Suspension component mounting prescribed area is corroded but not considered excessive sill (2.4.A.3)
  • Offside Rear Inner Suspension component mounting prescribed area is corroded but not considered excessive sill (2.4.A.3)
  • Some corrosion on all suspension and brake components
  • Exhaust corroded

and the rest of the MOT's, considering the low mileage, don't inspire confidence.

To me it has all the hallmarks of a generally neglected car, i'd be surprised if its seen an oil change since warranty ended, it doesn't sound like the typical older owner who usually look after their cars better than this.

It's banger material and worth about £400 tops, but then only if you can bring it back up standard yourself or you have a very understanding and fair priced mechanic and the corrosion noted in 2016 isn't now beyond treating.

If you wanted it for 18 months to tide you over and the corrosion isn't excessive enough to fail this years MOT, then for the price of a new fan belt (we assume its the fanbelt squealing, it could be the water pump or alternator about to pop its clogs, hence why its worth less than half of what he's asking) and a quick bit of handy spannering by someone it could be a cheap runabout till August 2020, and then you'd might get £3/400 back if the MOT failure sheet wasn't yards long, but i wouldn't be paying a penny over £500 for this car as it is.

The steering judder could be wheels need balancing, or it needs new tyres, but from the sounds of it it might need new discs and pads all round.

Difficult without seeing it in the flesh to give a realistic appraisal of costs.

2007 Kia Picanto - Need Mechanical Advice - skidpan

Some Picanto's of this period suffered issues with a faulty crank bolt that secured the front pulley. Cars that used Kia dealers for servicing should have been sorted (simple replacement of bolt) but those serviced outside the network (or not serviced at all were at risk of the bolt failing and the damage required a new crank to sort.

I suspect that this car has suffered damage and the regular tightening is just the owners bodge. Only fix is new crank/engine. The expense will write off the car.

Run away very fast.
