Hello,

I will be driving to Bulgaria in January 2019 and i was wondering if anyone has done this trip before and has any advice?

I will be leaving from Inverness and driving for a few days, staying at hotels along the way.

Do you need snow tyres fitted to drive in Bulgaria?

Many thanks

What is your route? If passing through Germany you will need to consider winter tyres as well as winter driving in general.

I’d definitely be getting winter tyres for a journey like that across mainland Europe in midwinter! You’re not likely to avoid copious ice, frost and snow. You might get away with it in the UK but winter is usually a lot colder in those parts!

hubnut did a similar journey in reverse recently, summer though, I am sure he could offer some ideas, indeed just watching some of the videos may help

Correct insurance and winter tyres or all season tyres.

Remember that not all tyres marked "winter" "all season" or even "M & S" are allowed in some countries. The best ones to buy that are universal are those marked with the 3 peak mountain and snow flake symbol which shows that they have passed certain standards.

I have a set of tyres on my car that are summer tread pattern and are sold as summer tyres. But near the bead there are moulded letters indicating they are "M & S" tyres, I doubt they would cope with wet grass, who are they trying to kid?

They are all here in Germany they have to have a snowflake and a mountain embossed on the side plus the date.

By the way you do commit an offence in any European country for not fitting them the offence is using the car when it is cold outside so if you do not use your car in winter and many do not or it stays warm you are ok.

Not quite correct. In Germany M+S tyres are accepted until Sept. 2024 if manufactured before 31.12.2017. Other countries, eg Austria accept M+S tyres.

I think you should do a bit of reading.

I guess you haven't learnt enough German. Google translate will help if you have problems.

Or if you would rather have the legal text, read the StVZO section 36 4(a):

4a) Abweichend von § 36 Absatz 4 gelten bis zum Ablauf des 30. September 2024 als Reifen für winterliche Wetterverhältnisse auch Luftreifen im Sinne des Absatzes 2, die

die in Anhang II Nummer 2.2 der Richtlinie 92/23/EWG des Rates vom 31. März 1992 über Reifen von Kraftfahrzeugen und Kraftfahrzeuganhängern und über ihre Montage (ABl. I live in Austria. Winter tyres are mandatory for a reason! Don't even think of going without them. Do not use all-season tyres, they're not good enough in central Europe - that is, they are legal if correctly marked, but just not man enough for potential conditions. January is when the big dumpings arrive.

One more tip. Don't set yourself an aggressive schedule, allow plenty of time between overnights. We've driven from the UK back to Austria at the end of December, and a journey that normally takes us 6 hours took us 10....

Okay thank you guys,

I thought us much, i have also read you need to carry snow chains with you incase the weather turns really nasty.

My grandparents used to do this run twice a year, when they used to stay over in their holiday home. Now that there both gone, we need to start organising the house and January is the only time everyone is available.

I will look for tyres with clear markings and good tread pattern.

My car is 2016 Dacia Sandero, so parts availability should be plentiful in Europe should we need any,

Many thanks

Don't forget the winter strength screen wash too! (not -5, won't be strong enough)

Plenty of Bulgarian registered cars in Cambridgeshire working on the farms, most are old Mercs, Audis or Opels so your modern Dacia Sandero should be fine

Apart from the obvious need for winter tyres, mandatory in lots of countries in Central/Eastern Europe, the de-icing need consideration. Very low temperature screen wash. If you can find one, getting a retro fit kit to heat the screen wash, tubes and nozzles would be a good idea. The one on my Volvo is excellent. Dry newspaper over the windscreen at night, held on with the wiper blades stopped mid-screen. Works a treat for a clear screen in the mornings. You may find though the major problem may be ice on the inside of the car. You can run the AC on full for a few minutes prior to stopping to reduce condensation, or you just have to wait until the car heats up. Worth a full winter check on your battery, cooling system too. Peace of mind and all that.

Good luck and give us details of the trip when you return.

Cheers Concrete
