Nissan Qashqai - Mot advisories - Sumpat

Stupidly purchased a car on Friday without looking at MOT from an independent garage .MOT was done in July 2018 but has a list of advisories including front tire close to legal limit and brake pads needs changing.Had I checked this I would of been hesitant to purchase or negotiated on price.

Do I now get my own service done ? Or is there an type of inspection I should get done ?

I did email the garage to see if any of the work was carried out but they have not replied and I strongly feel that have not as they did not mention the MOTduring sale.

I really feel so stupid being my first big purchase on a car which I never done my research and just put ally trust in the garage.

Any help / advice is much appreciated.

Take it back & ask for the tyres & brakes to be fixed.

If they refuse tell them that you will go elsewhere, have the job done, get the invoices + court forms & then take them to small claims court.

A set of pads & say 2 x modest car tyres is not a lot if they do it themselves - 3rd party garage charges + courrt fees soon adds up.

Thing is, if the tyres are still legal then they can tell you to get stuffed.

Same for the brakes. Even if the pads are 95% worn, if they work then the garage has completed it's legal liabilities to you.

Remember, those things are 'consumables', and this is a used car. The data was freely available, and, in the case of the tyre, clearly visible too.

Oh, and just remember that you're griping about the garage not getting back to you yet .. it's been a bank holiday weekend !

Take it as a lesson learned. The garage has done nothing illegal here but had you checked beforehand you could have negotiated new tyres and possibly pads. That said it depends on who did the Mot as many garages, particularly larger fast fit centres will try to get the cost of new pads and discs out of you when they’re not even 50% worn.

The dealer would also fit the cheapest Chinese made tyres they can get hold of which would damage wet weather handling. Spend a bit more and get some decent middle price tyres or above. This is the most important thing on your car as it is the only thing keeping it on the road.

The most important thing you need to check before buying one of these however is the service history. This is really just a Renault Megane underneath and the Renault engines are prone to early timing belt failure so it must be changed along with the water pump and tensioners on schedule or earlier. Few owners will do it before selling or part-exchanging and dealers won’t spend money doing it either.

What age is it and is there proof of regular servicing and if appropriate a timing belt change?

Thank you for your replies .I have decided I should for peace of mind have my own service done and if it shows up any major faults then I may have a leg to stand on .It's just cimlcomple forget ask about the MOT and maybe got sucked into the sales talk and felt if the e was an issues the would of disclosed them to me. Definitely an expensive lesson learned .

I'm hoping we garage will get back to me ( as mentioned being a bank holiday weekend ).I assume if there is a major fault / issue I can legally do something if it's within 30days.

Advisories are just that, advice. Depending on the mindset of the tester, the message on the tyres could mean urgent attention, or simply that if you do 10K a year you will/may need new tyres before the next MoT. Check the tread depth yourself and make your own judgment - if you decide the tyres will become illegal very soon, go back to the seller and say so. Brake pads likewise - if you are heavy on your brakes make a similar decision, but unless they are VERY near the limit the seller is not likely to help out IMHO.

The car has passed with advisories; as far as that goes it is road-legal and any friendly offers from the seller will be goodwill only.

Have a look at both and make your own judgement.

If it turns out you can't lever any goodwill from the seller, brake pads arent usually difficult to replace.

IF you have any interest in aquiring any DIY car skills (I realise most people don't) brakes are a good area to get into, because if you do it yourself you'll know exactly how much you can rely on the work.
