Toyota Auris - Buying Advice - Toyota Auris MK1 vs MK2 - Shaun '92

Hello,

New to the forum and would like to make an introduction with this post...

I'm looking to purchase an Auris and would appreciate it if I can get some opinions on differences (perhaps pros/cons) between the MK1 an MK2 models?

I have opted for either a 1.6 manual transmission or the 1.8 Hybrid auto variant. Trim levels don't concern me all too much, I'd say I'm placing the greatest emphasis on practicality, refinement and ride comfort.

My budget is around £4-5k (I'm saving a monster amount for a second car, the Auris will be the all-purpose vehicle). I've found a few bargain examples of '10 models for less than £4k inclusive of full VOSA and service history etc.

I'm in a position to purchase a '10-'12 this year but for a '13 onwards I'd have to wait it out until 2019.

The Mk II is a much better car but a decent one is beyond this budget with the entry point realistically £6-£6.5k. However the Mk I Auris (up to 2012) is a robust and sensible used buy. On your budget however I’d keep it as simple as possible and forget the much more complex hybrid models in favour of the longlived 1.33 and 1.6 petrols instead. There’s little to worry about here as long as you buy one with a full service history. Most of them do with older well funded owners typical.

It’s not the most entertaining car to drive though and it’s not always wise to limit yourself to one make and model when shopping on a tight budget. I’d open up your search a bit to include the Mazda 3 1.6 petrol, Honda Civic 1.8 petrol and Ford Focus 1.6 petrol. All three are more entertaining to drive and should prove just as robust if looked after.

However, excitement really doesn't personally factor into the equation (second car I'm long term saving for is an FD RX7).

I've kept my first car (K11 Micra), since I started driving 5 years ago, the only reason for replacing it soon is because I've become frustrated with the sheer lack of power (really does get tiresome when overtaking is necessary) and bodywork age related issues (I've had to sand, prime and respray flaking body exterior patches today).

I cover roughly 4-5000 miles in a year, it consists mostly of myself commuting to work, occassionally me and grandpa on long distance journeys and very occassionally both of us with other folk in the backseats.

The Mazda 3 seems like a sensible proposition, however I'd have to go for the 2 litre variant. I'd like quite a step up from the Micra and having driven several cars that hover near the 100hp mark, I wasn't too impressed (MKV Astra, Impreza 1.5, Megane 1.5).

Had a Mk 1 Auris hybrid - obvious pluses - fuel economy; it's an automatic, relative inexpensive servicing - full service history with "hybrid health certificates" covers the hybrid system up to 10 years - better ride on the 15"wheels - Connect pack is useful as it includes a demountable TomTom sat-nav. Check whether the boot will carry any objects you carry regularly, as it has a limited back-to-front dimension. Reasonable basic motoring

The second generation Auris is a re-worked first generation, and even carried forward the Type Approval.

As regards boot space, the first generation Auris hybrid has the hybrid battery beneath the boot floor, which makes the boot shallower. The second generation has the hybrid battery more beneath the rear seats. The petrol engined models don't have this issue.
